About the Project
Connecting Canadian Kids to the World (CCKW) is an inquiry-based multi subject grade 6 Social Studies Unit that integrates over 25 different types of software and technology. During the unit a partnership is created between schools of the four Atlantic Rim continents. Students work in groups to collaboratively explore, research, develop and ultimately teach their classmates the curricular outcomes using different types of technology. CCKW is designed to easily be adapted to meet the needs of teachers in any grade, in any school, and in any culture. The entire unit can be accessed right here on our blog for free, of course.
CCKW exposes students to new cultures breaking down racial barriers and stereotypes. It promotes an atmosphere of respect, cooperation, and appreciation for other cultures. It builds lifelong friendships that will continue to make an impact on all those involved. It has helped us to live out our school system's Vision Statement: "To reach out and transform the world."
Here are some of the highlights of the unit.
Highlights of the Unit
1. Meets all learning types and abilities
Uses over 25 different types of software and technology to engage learners and most of the software is available for free. It takes an inquiry based approach so students take ownership of the project because they are given so much control over their learning.
2. Covers many curriculum areas
Teachers always seem to be struggling to fit everything in, the more subjects you can bring into a unit the better, as it gives us more time to meet all the curriculum outcomes of each subject area. This unit incorporated Social Studies, English Language Arts, Technology, Visual Art, Music, Religion, and First Nations content
3. Designed to easily be adapted and shared with teachers all over the world
We created this blog as an online platform to host the entire unit and all presentations. It contains a concise and clear unit plan and delivery method for any educator to use worldwide. On the blog we explain how the unit can be easily adapted to meet the needs of any classroom. This project will is advertised in our Learning Communities, in our professional development on-line lounge, on the Microsoft Partners in Learning Sites worldwide, the GSCS Pre K-8 Resources One-Stop-Shop, EPals, FaceBook, Wikipedia, YouTube and other places as well
Because the unit is so collaborative the best work is brought out of each student. Collaboration is not only between students, but also between the numerous teachers involved in the project.
5. Cultural Diversity
Many students graduate from high school with having little exposure to other cultures. This project gives kids authentic experiences with cultures all over the world.
6. Student evaluation
Watch some of the videos and read the feedback on the Student Comment Page to see the rave reviews the students gave about their experience in the project
