Panama/Costa Rica Excursion 2014
The student/parent meeting for the Panama/Costa Rica Excursion 2014 is on Tues., May 28 at 7pm in the theatre. Our travel agent from TravelMasters will be in attendance to discuss the details of the tour and the teacher supervisors will discuss the guidelines and expectations for applicants.
Students who want the opportunity to participate in this excursion must attend this meeting with at least one parent. Signed applications and booking forms will be accepted on the evening of May 28 with a deposit of $500 payable to "Holy Cross High School - Costa Rica." There is an important rules/ regulations meeting for all City Track and Field Team members on Tuesday at 12:05 in the theater. There are some strict guidelines that must be adhered to- to prevent disqualification at Cities. Please be there, even if you are a veteran Holy Cross Track and Field athlete. As well, there are no Field House practices scheduled for Tues., May 28 (the day before Cities) but we are having a team practice at school (on the field by Lion's arena) on this day from 3:30-4:30pm. Please make arrangements to be there.

(11:00 is the start time for the community...12:00 is the start time for our students) This event is being held in conjunction with the SRC year-end barbeque which will begin at noon. (Hot Dog and a drink for $2.00, Snow Cone for $1.00 and Pop Corn for $1.00) The car show will occur in the Porter South and Porter East staff parking lots. There is a limit of 75 vehicles. This year we are inviting community participation in the car show through our school's partnership with the Saskatoon Council on Aging. 45 spaces are reserved for students and 30 for community members. There will be a great prize for each category, which include: 50th Anniversary Best Vehicle (1963); Best of the Years our Students Were Born (1995-1998); Best of Each Decade (70's, 80's, 90's 00's, 10's); Best School Colors (Green & White); Best Weird & Wonderful; Loudest (sound system); Dirtiest; Best Beater.
Spectators will be able to vote for the Fan Favorite, which will win the Grand Prize. Entry forms are available at the main office. Entry fee is $2.00. Entries are due by June 4. We are looking forward to seeing a lot of great vehicles!

Any students who are driving are asked to meet by the car in the parking lot.Please note that our web site is not functioning properly and schedules will not be posted until further notice. Therefore, please check the schedule posted on the driver's ed bulletin board, the student notices and the school infocaster. A notice will be put out when the site is up and running again.
If your child is sick or absent at school and you know that they are scheduled for a drive, please phone the school directly and they will let the driver instructor know.

Box Lunch Auction
Did you know... in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is difficult to access information? Development and Peace is helping set up community radio stations in the Congo. These stations are a source of vital news and information about everything from new agricultural practices to teaching about legal rights. Box Lunch Auction money will help give a voice to the people of the Congo.
Holy Cross Music Parents Association Year End Reports
The year end reports for the HCMPA are now available on the Music web page at http://blog.scs.sk.ca/holycrossmusic/. Parents are encouraged to review these reports prior to the Annual General Meeting at the Spring Concerts on Sun., May 26. This will enable us to get through the meeting portion of the afternoon much quicker and allow more time for the students to perform.

Assignment Saving Lives Bursary Program

SRC Car Show
The 2nd Annual Holy Cross SRC Car Show is being held on Fri., June 7 from 11am to 1pm. This event is being held in conjunction with the SRC year-end barbeque which will begin at noon. The car show will occur in the Porter South and Porter East staff parking lots. There is a limit of 75 vehicles. This year we are inviting community participation in the car show through our school's partnership with the Saskatoon Council on Aging. 45 spaces are reserved for students and 30 for community members. There will be a great prize for each category, which include: 50th Anniversary Best Vehicle (1963); Best of the Years our Students Were Born (1995-1998); Best of Each Decade (70's, 80's, 90's 00's, 10's); Best School Colors (Green & White); Best Weird & Wonderful; Loudest (sound system); Dirtiest; Best Beater.
Spectators will be able to vote for the Fan Favorite, which will win the Grand Prize. Entry forms are available at the main office. Entry fee is $2.00. Entries are due by June 4. We are looking forward to seeing a lot of great vehicles!
Box Lunch Auction
Did you know... during the earthquake in Haiti, over 70,000 buildings collapsed resulting in over 10 million cubic metres of debris? The institute of technology and community outreach, a D&P partner, is helping to clean up the debris and is reconstructing houses for displaced Haitians.
Your lunch money will help support the people of Haiti in rebuilding their homes and lives.

Holy Cross Music Parents Association Year End Reports
The year end reports for the HCMPA are now available on the Music web page at http://blog.scs.sk.ca/holycrossmusic/. Parents are encouraged to review these reports prior to the Annual General Meeting at the Spring Concerts on Sun., May 26. This will enable us to get through the meeting portion of the afternoon much quicker and allow more time for the students to perform.

Students interested in taking this class are asked to pick up a registration form in student services. Registration forms and the $90 application fee are due back to Mrs. Remizowski no later than May 30th.

Students that have signed up to write the PSAT are reminded that the $20 fee must be paid before test materials can be ordered. Please bring your $20 to student services before May 31st. There is still room for students that would like to write the PSAT- (Practise SAT). See Mrs. Remizowski for more information.

The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange
For six weeks, during the summer, participants live with a host family and work in a community where French predominates. This exchange is offered at a minimal cost of $75 to the participants - which cover travel itinerary and the activities. Participants travel with a group of peers, and take part in activities every weekend and some weeknights to deepen their connection to each other and their new community - with the support of the YMCA Local Coordinator. Must be 16 or 17 years old. The program starts at the end of June, so students should apply online before May 24 at www.summer-work.com

This is a 13-week pre-employment program and the first step to begin this career path. The program is delivered in partnership with Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. The Emergency Medical Responder 2-week program is the advance first aid training available to explore the world of Emergency Medical and is offered twice yearly. Also, Parkland College is offering the SIAST Primary Care Paramedic program as part of the Emergency Services training. Box Lunch Auction
Did you know... The Afghan Women's Resource Centre is a partner of Development and Peace. It is an organization which helps with women's empowerment and child protection. The centre trains teachers, especially in science skills. Money donated at the Box Lunch Auction will help the Women's Resource Centre continue their good work.
The auction is less than two weeks to go! Please consider preparing a lunch for the box lunch auction, and give the details to Mrs. Bitz this week. So far we have 6 lunches; more would certainly help. Staff and students not involved in a period 3 class are encouraged to prepare a lunch as well. This is our grand effort to extend a helping hand to people and places that need our support.

Did you know... that the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been experiencing a 10 year civil war leaving the lives of many in ruin. Development and Peace supports community radio in the DRC that educates people about their rights and democracy and lets them know that peace is possible in their country.
Environmental Club
Huge thank you to all the students who helped rid James Anderson Park of at least 500 European Buckthorn shrubs and trees. It was thorny work. A big shout out to Mrs. Mumford's 3 Bio20 classes, Ms. Caswell's Bio 20 class, Mrs. Bitz's PS20/CE20 class, and Mr. Scott's PS30, NS30, and 2 ELA10A classes. The scholarship:
- Is open to women* 18 years and over, from Saskatoon and area

Did you know.... That the earthquake in Haiti that happened three years ago was the worst one the country has seen in 200 years. Many people are still without permanent homes. The Institute for Technology and Community Outreach is a partner of Development and Peace and is working with communities to rebuild homes and allowing communities to regrow.

Community First Working For Women Scholarship
Applications are invited for a $1000 scholarship to be awarded in 2013 to a woman who wishes to make herself more employable through education.
The scholarship:
- Is open to women* 18 years and over, from Saskatoon and area
- May be applied to any type of study to increase employability
- Assists women in financial need with tuition costs, books and supplies, and/or education-related costs such as child care, transportation, etc. For more information, please see a counsellor in Student Services. Deadline is May 31st.

Assignment Saving Lives Bursary Program is an opportunity for you to assist Canadian Blood services during the summer. Students in grade 11 and 12 are challenged to recruit 25 blood donors who are willing to donate between June 1 and September 2, 2013. $1500 to the student who recruits the most NEW donors and $1000 bursary to the student who recruits the most overall. Interested students must complete and submit a registration form (available in student services). All students will receive training in May before participating.

Did you know... that Afghanistan is lacking in basic human rights for women? Often girls are prevented from going to school.
The Afghan Women's Resource Centre is a partner of Development and Peace. The centre works towards giving girls and women many opportunities including learning how to read, starting businesses and escaping domestic violence.

It is a time to gather as a community and raise money for Development and Peace partners around the world. This year we are focussing on three partners in three different regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
All of these groups are working to build lives and give hope.

Hike through the dense rainforest, zipline over the stunning canopy, swim in the warm ocean, view extraordinary sites including the Panama Canal and the active Arenel Volcano, and spot the multitude of tropical creatures including sloths, monkeys, and crocodiles!

Phys Ed Area - Renovations
All players must clean all personal belongings out of their team room lockers today. Everything must be out of both the guys and girls locker rooms and the Mezaninne change room by 3:30 p.m. today. Please take care of your things, so our Phys ed. Staff can prepare for the renovations to the area.
The boys change room in the Phys. Ed. Area will also be under construction starting Monday morning, no one will be allowed in that area. So we need all students to remove all their personal belongings including their locks from their lockers by 3:30 p.m. today.
