Debate Unit - Grade 5

This is a collaborative unit that employs many technological skills, as well as writing and oral skills. The team booked the notebook USB bracelets that are available for booking through the Resource Centre, as well as the MP3 kit that is also available.

Create Movie | Zimmer Twins

The Zimmer Twins is a neat site for introducing elementary school students to making simple animated video stories. On the Zimmer Twins site students can create a story from scratch or complete one of the "cliff hanger" story starters. Students do not need to have any drawing skills in order to create a story as all elements are added to the video through a simple drag and drop interface. Students select settings, characters, character actions, emotions, and text styles then drag those elements into the storyboard. Students then arrange those elements and type words into the conversation bubbles where appropriate

Annenberg Media Grade 6-8

Videos can be a good teaching resource, but they need to be used as part of lesson rather than being the lesson. Annenberg Media provides lesson plans that model using video as a part of the lesson rather than using video as the lesson. Lesson plans are categorized by content and grade level. Most of the lesson plans include free online videos. To find lessons that include free online videos look for a small "VOD" symbol attached near the title of each lesson plan. WordAHead-Vocabulary Lists - AWESOME!!

WordAhead now gives teachers the ability to create custom playlists of vocabulary videos. The playlists can be shared via email, a posted link on a blog, or by posting a vocabulary video widget on a blog or website. The teacher section of WordAhead also offers advice for having students create their own vocabulary videos.

Punctuation Campground

In the activity, a sentence is presented for the student. The student then has to determine what punctuation to add to the sentence to make it correct.

To enter the punctuation, students touch where they want to enter some punctuation and then they touch on the punctuation types listed below the sentence. If they need to move the cursor, they can touch on arrows to place the cursor exactly where they want.

The activity has a hint button that shows where punctuation needs to go but does not tell the student what punctuation is required. Also, below the activity are links to a glossary where students can learn when to use the correct punctuation.

Interactive Whiteboard Games | PBS KIDS

The PBS KIDS Interactive Whiteboard Games collection is simply outstanding and definitely deserves the credit it gets. For reasons that should become obvious, it is also the #1 website shared by the teachers who I follow on Twitter.

When you go to the site, you can click on the subject area and it will do a fun scroll to that particular subject area. In addition, you can also sort on title, description, level, topic, and audio by clicking on the corresponding word in the header for each subject.

Teaching in the Information Age requires that educators modify their view and transform their instructional practices to utilize technology's power to improve the reading ability of students. Today's students need to be guided in developing the ability to make use of the Internet and multimedia technology to increase critical literacy skills. Inquiry-based instruction in a collaborative classroom environment helps teachers to do just that. You can register and create a multimedia webpage about your choices, but, even better (at least, in my view), you can go to the Guestbook area and write a short piece that appears immediately (there are automatic filters to screen content, plus it's manually screened later).

Weboword - Vocabulary Visualized

Weboword is a fun little website designed to help students learn new vocabulary words. Each of the vocabulary words on Weboword have cartoon drawings depicting the meaning of that word. Students are encouraged to submit their own drawings to Weboword. Weboword also offers crossword puzzles for students to try. Weboword appears to be a relatively new website, but the idea of the website is a good one. I hope that Weboword is able to get some traction and become a larger depot of vocabulary words and activities.
