COMMON DISMISSAL DAY     IS ON May  18, 2007 - NO SCHOOL

THEME:  The theme for this month is PERSEVERANCE.  Perseverance is the ability one has to get through things in life even when we think it is impossible or very difficult.  Perseverance is the ability one has to work hard at reaching a goal.  Perseverance is not giving up when the going is difficult - it is about doing your best and showing your best effort everyday.  This month we will work on developing the Christian Character of perseverance.

COUNTDOWN TO LENT!

The meaning of Lent can be summed up in one word:  PREPARATION.  Lent is the 40 day period of preparation to renew our baptismal promises at Easter.  We are reminded that the Lenten Works are *prayer, *penance, *fasting and *alms giving.  Take time this Lenten Season to be kind, generous and responsible.

Lenten is a season for...
* Making time and space to remember what it means to be a Christian, by remembering the life , death, and resurrection of Jesus in a special way.
* Remembering the life message of Jesus - recommitting to living as followers of Jesus in today's world.
* Giving up the negative in our lives to make room for more positive.
* Being open to change of heart and habit - to deepening our relationship with Jesus and with each other.
* Taking time from the usual daily routine to focus on what is most important in our lives.
* Acknowledging the parts of our lives that need forgiveness and changing and working to make them right again.
* Clearing out some space in our lives so God can enter and fill it; and taking time to discover where God has always been.

We will celebrate Lent in the following ways:
-  Lenten Liturgy #4 - 10:40am Tues., Mar. 27 in school gym
Passion Play "The Last Days of Christ" - 10:40am Thurs., Apr. 5 in school gym

**We will be collecting Food Items throughout Lent for families in need.  Please send non-perishable food items with your child to your child's classroom or to the front office. Begining March 19, the fourth week of Lent, we will begin to collect coins for our Share Lent Project. Students are asked to bring coins to their classroom.  Coins collected will be weighed at the end of the project.

ST. EDWARD SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL:   Our next meeting will be held on Monday April 2nd at 7:30 p.m.  At this meeting we will discuss the Spring Carnival, begin to make plans for the 50th Anniversary of St. Edward School and discuss changes to the School Community Council based on guidelines from the Department of Learning.  Our 50th Anniversary will be held on Nov. 16th, 2007.  Keep posted for details regarding the anniversary and please help get the message out to those you know that may have had a connection to St. Edward School over the past 50 years.

ST. EDWARD TEAM SPORTS:
Congratulations to the relay teams that competed for St. Edward School at the Saskatoon Catholic Schools Meet and the Saskatoon Indoor Championships.  Our teams represented our school very well.  We are proud of our track teams.  Thanks again to all athletes and parents for their commitment and enthusiasm.  It has been a wonderful season.  Thank you to Mr. Sysing and Mrs. Thorson for coaching and giving so generously of their time and talents.

Spring Choir

Our Spring Choir starts this week.  Practice times are Tuesday (8:30 – 9:00) and Thursday (8:30 – 9:00).  We will be practicing for the Grade 7s production of the Passion.  All parents are invited to come and watch this dramatic play.  The date for the play is set for Holy Thursday, March 5th at 10:40am.

CLOSURE OF SIDEWALK ON CIRCLE DRIVE BRIDGE STARTS MONDAY, MARCH 5 : The remaining sidewalk on the Circle Drive Bridge will be closed starting on Monday, March 5, for a period of approximately three months until the new pedestrian walkway is completed. To successfully complete the widening of the eastbound Circle Drive Bridge in 2007, and potentially avoid having portions of the work pushed into 2008, work on the bridge widening must start earlier than anticipated. Closure of the sidewalk is required for this work to begin. During construction pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to use the CP Railway Bridge (south of the Circle Drive Bridge, near the weir) to cross the South Saskatchewan River. Motorists are reminded to please proceed carefully, obey the posted speed limits, and watch for work crews. The City of Saskatoon thanks pedestrians, cyclists and motorists for their patience.
