Weather nice , no need to put your education on hold

It is nice that spring is here but we need to remember your education is still very important... Every credit earned will help you graduate this year or in the future.. Teachers are working very hard to make the learning interesting and you need to attend so you will find educational success. Some grade 12's will be arriving home tomorrow from Hawaii, some of you will be starting Drivers Education next week - attendance will be mandatory and some of you will be going to Cultural Camp at Waterhen First Nations next week. Only a month and half left in the school year - lots of opportunities and I hope you will take advantage of them.. If you have not been in school the last few days - it is never to late to make your learning a priority.

Hopefully you will find your way to Oskayak High School tomorrow..

29th Annual Native Graduate Recognition Night

SIMFC is proud to host the 29th Annual Native Graduate Recognition Night for students of Aboriginal ancestry and have successfully completed Grade 12 at a school within Saskatoon. If you are on track to graduate this year from Oskayak High School we encourage you to attend this event to honour your accomplishment.
The Native Recognition Night will be held at Prairieland Park - Hall B on May 30th, 2013. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. You and an escort can attend this event free of charge. Please come and see me for details. An application form must be submitted for attending this event by May 13, 2013. Two additional tickets for the event for graduate family and friends can be purchased by May 23, 2013. Any remaining tickets to the event will be available for purchase on May 24,2013.
Oskayak students wanting to apply for the scholarships for this event please come and get the scholarship criteria information from me. You will be expected to write an essay briefly describing yourself, high school accomplishments , goals, aspirations and post secondary plans.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding this event or applying for scholarships.
If you would like to just attend the event , please just fill out the application and submit to me directly.
Just a Reminder.... Deadline for Scholarship applications is May 6, 2013 and application to attend the event only is May 13, 2013

Pink Revolution

Thank you to all you participated in the Pink Revolution Campaign last week. What a great response in wearing pink flowers to take a stand against bullying! Thank you to all the classrooms who took the time to decorate their classroom doors to help inform, motivate our students about bullying. Congratulations to Dan Pawluck's classroom who won the pizza lunch for their class. Continue to make Oskayak a warm, welcoming place for all.. Where students can find educational success!

Block 4 starts next Thursday April 18,2013

Students just finishing up with their Block 3 credits please communicate with your teachers to make sure the necessary work is done and ask for help if needed. Only you can make it happen! We can encourage and support you but in the end it is up to you. With Block 4 approaching please make sure you take time to select your classes. If you do not want to spend time in long lines next Thursday, go to the office in the next few days and fill out the pink form. Transcripts will be printed and a short visit with administration will ensure you are on the right track.
To the Students who did not experience educational success last block. It is never too late to make your education a priority. You are always welcome at Oskayak High School if you truly want to complete your education. Come in next week, pick your classes and start a positive and exciting journey.

If you want to look like a million bucks on your special day . Girls ! Please come and see me for an application for the Princess Shop. With a refundable $40 deposit you will get the dress of your dreams,your hair and make- up done, professional photographs and a limo ride to the graduation venue. Boys! I have arranged for you to get a formal suit, with a shirt and tie for your special day from Atch and Company Men's Wear. A $50 deposit will be required to secure a suit rental. Total cost of a formal suit rental will be $99 with alterations included. If you are interested come and see me and I will explain the process.

Social Justice Meeting March 19,2013

Please bring your lunch up to Gabe's room during the lunch hour tomorrow . We will reflect on We Day Saskatchewan, discuss what it meant to you and get organized to make the We Day Video. We Day /Me to We (t-shirts )and jewelry will be raffled off this month. We will be selling raffle tickets at noon hour in the lobby all week and at our Round Dance on March 22nd, 2013. Tickets are only $1 and all proceeds will go toward Adopt A Village Ecuador. Come out , purchase or help sell tickets.

Tomorrow and Thursday during the lunch in the computer lab we would like to hear from you ... If you attended We Day Saskatchewan on February 27, 2013 , we would like to put together a video with your thoughts and reactions to this life changing event. What did "We Day "mean to you ? What performer or motivational speaker touched your heart, or helped you believe you could make a difference ? Please take sometime out of your busy day and contribute to the video.

- Friday @ noon hour we will have a Social Justice Meeting in Gabe's room during the lunch hour... Please bring your lunch up to the classroom. We will discuss the Raffle to be done the week of March 18-22 nd and discuss future activities/ fundraising projects for Adopt A Village Ecuador Clean Water Project. Hope to see you all there.

Agriculture in the Classroom Cooking Contest

"Cooking Up Saskatchewan" is an event that promotes inquiry-based learning for high school students. In a two-part competition, students are challenged to plan and prepare a meal featuring chicken as the main ingredient and improve their communication skills by creating and delivering a short presentation. Cancer Society Video Contest

Once again the Cancer Society is launching the 3rd annual Let's Talk Tobacco Contest for Saskatchewan students between the ages of 10 and 15 years. This year they are partnering with the northern health regions and the northern inter-tribal health authority. Smoking is an epidemic among Saskatchewan youth, with the highest youth smoking rates in Canada, 9 years running. Health groups are working hard to address the problem. For example, to help ease the transition to tobacco-free schools, a toolkit has been developed by the cancer Society for teachers and staff.

March 8 is International Women's Day. International Women's Week begins from March 3 to March 9. Each year at this time, Canadians celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation in all aspects of their lives.

Canada's theme for International Women's Day and Week 2013 - Working Together: Engaging Men to End Violence against Women - provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the impacts of violence against women and girls, and how we can all be part of the solution. You can promote this special week by:

· sharing information on this year's theme for IWD; or

· participating or organizing an event.

Oskayak Students attend Saskatchewan's first WeDay.

54 students from Oskayak attended Saskatchewan's first WeDay. Students who attended had to earn their ticket to attend by taking local and global initiatives in community service. Over the past few months students have been working hard raising money through weekly doughnut sales, clearing snow for local businesses, collecting thousands of pennies, hosting social justice events and many, many more activities.
