Sketchy Grades for Cyber Schools
Cyber schools -- where students complete all coursework online using home computers -- are a big hit with parents, who are signing up their children as quickly as the virtual doors open. However, test results for 2003 show students at many cyber schools are not measuring up to state standards or to their peers who attend brick-and-mortar schools.

Comparative Analysis of Face-to-Face and Online Course Offerings
Quality of instruction can be improved by a variety of means. In this study, traditional classroom courses in computer science were the baseline for comparison with online learning (5 semester-pairs). In four of five semester pairs, superior results were obtained with online courses enriched with laboratory, additional quizzes and homework.
EVALUATING ONLINE DISCUSSIONS: FOUR DIFFERENT FRAMES OF ANALYSIS
This study uses four different "frames" to analyze 17 online discussions that occurred in two doctoral-level classes in educational leadership. Two of the frames were developmental models: King and Kitchener's Reflective Judgment Model and Perry's model of intellectual and ethical development. Two of the frames captured levels of thinking: Garrison's four-stage critical-thinking model and Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives.

Ranting Teacher Homepage
Man, Could I relate to some of this ranting.
Before you explore this website, here's the warning.
If you are easily offended, think the sun shines out of your kid's behind, or are the chief inspector for schools, you'd better stop right here.
Maybe the contents of this site are tongue-in-cheek, or maybe I just relish the opportunity to rant after a hard day at the chalk-face being wound up by little scoundrels.
Yep, whether I should be or not, I'm a teacher. That's about as much as you need to know. So if you sympathise, empathise, or just want to know what kids really get up to when they're not being the sweet innocent that every parent thinks they have spawned, then welcome to my website.

Distance education unfairly attacked
Distance education unfairly attacked
Richard Schwier
Special to The StarPhoenix
Thursday, May 27, 2004
Following is the personal viewpoint of the writer, who teaches in the college of education at the U of S.
Barry Cooper (Klein's essay knocked unfairly, SP May 20) should look in the mirror and ask himself who is knocking what unfairly. His piece defending Ralph Klein's academic integrity takes an unfair and ignorant cut at Athabasca University, its faculty and programs and its academic standards.
Cooper says, "Athabasca University provides courses in distance learning in a wide range of subjects. No doubt it is as good at it as any other institution in the business. But no one would ever claim that education mediated by computers and software, by e-mail and the Internet, is the same as a face-to-face seminar or even a large conventional lecture. The expectations and standards are as different as the context within which these services are delivered."

Teaching Online First Hand Account
Taken from Perks and Pitfalls website
"One of the perks of teaching online is that it lets each student contribute to the discussion. For example, in one of my online classes we have students present a topic of information, then other students reply to it. Participation marks are built right into the course outline, so students do contribute.
In a traditional classroom, you may have people trying to dominate or others too shy to answer. Online instruction also teaches students to use the web as a learning tool and a research tool. Students are expected to look critically at the information provided on the web and source of the information.
There are pitfalls as well. Seventeen, eighteen and nineteen year old college students may not have the time and personal organizational skills (some adults never have it!) to learn in an environment that does not have a structured time on the timetable - they can learn at their own time, but it's not always easy to find the time, or set aside the time to do the work. Conference boards with huge numbers of student postings can be extremely difficult to read and almost overwhelming to some students and teachers. Because of this it is a good idea to go in everyday and read postings from students rather than let them sit and build up."

Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School Teacher Resources Unveiled
A new and exciting development for SCCS has been created. This includes the teacher resource section of their web site. There are two main areas that have been developed. These include Teacher Tutorials and Web Resources for Teachers.
The Teacher Tutorials section is centred around FAQ's in both video and print formats. In this area you will find software, Internet, webCT, and windows tutorials (just to name a few). Once you have learned the basics using a video format you can print off a hard copy as reference for the future. Find this site through the SCCS page under Teacher Information and then Teacher Resources or at
http://www.scs.sk.ca/cyber/elem/inservice.htm

The Web Resources for Teachers section focuses on valuable educational web sites for k-12 teachers. They have been categorized into thematic sections. Each site has a short description so that you can find what you are looking for in less time. There are many different sections in the resource site from each and every core subject area to online encyclopedias to software sites. A good question
I made the following statement:
The Teaching and Learning online blog has been up and running now for almost the full school year and has grown into a great community of e-learners.
To which I was asked:
How do you know this, Darren?
To which I reponsed
Good question :)
Feedback from the subscribers, my teachers and my developers who work at SCCS make up the community. The stats collected show that it is visited by 10 to 20 people a day, half who are unique visitors and the other half returnees. It has been pinged by some of the other elearning blogs out there. The growth of the world-wide community has even shocked myself, I have subscribers from Canada, United States, Austria, Australia, Portugal, Indonesia, Taiwan, Belgium, China, Korea, India, Turkey, Yugoslavia, United Kingdom, Spain, Japan and New Zealand.
This is a great community (my opinion) compared to the email method I was using in the past to share information with my staff and other who I would meet at conferences or on the web.
Many of the people who attended my presentations on e-learning have asked for good sites pertaining to a topic. In the past, my response would be a search of my sent emails to my staff who work in different subject areas find the appropriate material and then forward it via email. Now, all the sites and comments are saved in one location, the blog. My 22 staff members forward material they find that they like, comments and suggestions pertaining to online teaching and developing and I add them to the blog. This (my opinion) is why it has grown into a community of learners.
Hope this answered your question.

Daily, weekly or monthly
I have been struggling with what is the best way to let people know about the blog. I have been posting it to people who subscribe and the number is increasing. If anyone has any suggestions on how to increase the subscriptions to the blog, drop a comment to this posting. The second aspect of the subscription that I am working on is the best way to post the blog to people who subscribe. Is it better to post daily, weekly or monthly? Again if you have a feeling let me know by posting a comment to this posting.
I have dropped my Cyber glasses if you find them let me know then I would not have to ask because the view through my Cyber glasses would have given me the answer.

Intercultural E-mail Classroom Connections
Using the blog system
We have been looking at the blog as a method for our main stream highschool to add structure and functionality to their newsletters. Our schools in the past have been using programs like word and microsoft presentation to do their newletters. At the end of each month they gather together the material they want to include in the newsletter and compile it. They then print off a copy for each student in the school and they take it home to their parents. The second step is to place it on the school website as a web document and recently they have been putting together email lists of parents and email it to them. This system works but it does have some problems that a blog can fix.
1.) Information can be added to the newsletter blog all month long. (instead of doing it at the end of the month)
2.) The blog works on a template system which formats the newletter and archives it.
3.) The blog can still be printed off from the blog so it can be sent home to those parent who are not computer people.
4.) The notification system will allow parents to subscribe to the blog and will be notified when changes are made or on a monthly basis.
5.) In comparison to word or presentation, blogs have a very simple methods of adding information. It will allow for all three methods of delivery, print, website and email without a large learning curve.
We will let everyone know how this is accepted by the high school bosses (secretaries).
Another thought by the cyber glasses.

University Instructors reflections
(Taken from Stephen Downes Blog Stephen's Web)
Moving from traditional face-to-face teaching to teaching online can be a precarious process for instructors. In this qualitative study, I interviewed instructors who were engaged in online teaching, for the first time, in a graduate program at a Canadian university. All instructors had some postsecondary face-to-face teaching experience. In-depth interviews with the instructors showed that they had very little knowledge of the new medium they were entering and relied heavily on their face-to-face experiences and their own pedagogy. Instructors' reflections on their performances centered largely on their roles as deliverers of content. They revealed very little awareness of issues of collaborative learning, of learners' social presence, or of the role of community in online learning environments.

Welcome to the future
(taken from a discussion board at the University of Calgary)
It made me laugh.
Subject: Welcome to the future
You know you're living in 2003 when...
1. You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.
2. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3
4. You e-mail your mate who works at the desk next to you.
5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends is that they do not have e-mail addresses.
6. When you go home after a long day at work you still answer the phone in a business manner.
7. When you make phone calls from home, you accidentally dial "0" or "9" to get an outside line.
8. You've sat at the same desk for four years and worked for three
different companies.
10. You learn about your redundancy on the 11 o'clock news.
11. Your boss doesn't have the ability to do your job.
12. Contractors outnumber permanent staff and are more likely to get long-service awards.
AND THE REAL CLINCHERS ARE .
13. You read this entire list, and kept nodding and smiling.
14. As you read this list, you think about forwarding it to your "friends".
15. You are too busy to notice there was no No. 9
16. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn't a No.9

A glimpse into the virtual chapel
The following discussion is a direct cut and paste (with names removed) from our student chapel at Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School Our Chaplain starts discussion and then we try to leave the students to their debating with a minimun of adult interference.
The topic: No tuition university
Discussion was started by our chaplain:
What do you think about university without tuition, would that help people to gain a higher level of education?
Student one response:
I dont think that tuition is that bad, I just dont think some of the extra stuff like the funding for one of the cafe's that a couple of my brothers need to pay for should be manditory
Student two response:
I think tuitions are necessary, I mean, would you want to pay more taxes just so somebody who might not be serious about it at all can screw around? Tuitions keep it as serious as possible, therefore necessary...plus it's easier on the tax payers wallets.
SCCS Guidance Counsellor response:
As a Guidance Counsellor, I feel that here in Sask, we're very lucky that tuition hasn't soared like it has in other places. I have a fear though, that a university education will one day only be available to two types of people: the wealthy and the "deep in debt".
Student three response:
Tuition is reasonable, but let's hope it doesn't get too high. Everyone has the right to education, therefore it shouldn't be there for just the people who can afford it.
Student four response:
How would eliminating a university's major source of income be conducive to higher education?
Chaplain response:
Good question
This is not to help the university but to help students who endup in debt as soon as they finish. Universities are for students and money making businesses, but again that might be some outlandish european idea I don't think tuition keeps people serious about it, but certainly entry tests would. In some countries tuition is very low for the classes and the universities are government funded, there are private universities where you have smilar costs as here, but both function well. The admission to university is based on exams at the public ones and on an expensive tuition at the private ones. Maybe some sort of an option would help our higher education system.
Student four response:
Oh. The way the question was phrased, it looked like you were asking if universities could provide better education if they didn't charge tuition. I think I agree. A low-tuition public system with an entry exam alongside a high-tuition private system might be a good way to afford higher education to a broader range of people, rich and poor.
Student one response:
I think instead of no tuition at all, there should be a no tuition for fourth year students or something because they have already shown that they can show the effort, and the chances of them failing are slim because they have made it that far, plus they have tuition for the other three years. now things like medicine and music ed. have longer than four year courses but I still think that its a good idea.
Student five response:
I think that tuition is a nescessary thing, but I dont always agree with the prices and other things you have to pay for. For example, leafing through the university stuff I have already obtained, for full time students, student fees are almost five hundred dollars, including some insurances (not all of us need them), athletic fees, and other such things...is it really fair to those of us who dont have interest in the serious athletics of university and any other athletics to be having to pay almost fifty dollars a year?I think that Text books and classes cost enough as it is. Sure some people have it easy and can get through on scholarships, but the majority of people can't. I dont think that getting rid of tuition would do anything, but neither is sending the prices of education sky high. It will only end up being that our generation will be uneducated and the world will end up screwballed. Thats my opinion.
This discussion happened in the space of a couple of hours, participation in the Chapel and Student Lounge discussion is voluntary. Since January, there has been 1300 postings in the chapel discussion board. I thought people might be interested in this topic.

People under 30 are wimps
People over 35 should be dead.
Here's why ...
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's,50's, 60's, or even maybethe early 70's probably shouldn't have survived.
Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, ... and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.)
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was
always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
Horrors!
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop
with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because
we were always outside playing.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot
the brakes.
After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to
solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
as long as we were back when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
NO CELL PHONES!!!!!
Unthinkable!
We did not have Play stations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.
We had friends!
We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and
teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
They were accidents.
No one was to blame but us.
Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade.
Horrors!
Tests were not adjusted for any reason.
Our actions were our own.
Consequences were expected.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law.
Imagine that!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers
and problem solvers and inventors, ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of
innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
And you're one of them!
Congratulations!
Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow
up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated our
lives, for our own good !!!!!
People under 30 are WIMPS !
