Teachers Online
A while back I postulated the idea that all teachers today should have some form of online presence. I had some varying reactions to my ideas and had to do some mental justification. Maybe I needed to clarify.

I can't teach properly
I’m growing increasingly frustrated in the teaching profession. I can’t teach the way that I want to, and I find it extraordinarily difficult to teach in the ‘traditional’ manner which is assumed and seemingly expected by all around me. This means I fall between two stools of conceptions of teaching.

Journalism Grade Eleven Answers
This course offers a wide variety of concepts considering Journalism. It allows the student to study the many different modern ways of how media covers news through print journalism as well as electronic journalism. The final project allows the student to master an element of journalism that most appeals to themselves.
Student Comment:
I had a couple of students who were really quite interested in Journalism and appreciated the amount of learning material was offered.

Thoughts in a Dry Season
February 27, 2007
I am sure I would be worth 2 bottles at least.
Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car.
Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.
"What in bag?" asked the old woman.
Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband." The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said:
"Good trade."

Online learning "is going to reinvent high school in the United States," said Ken Ellwein, executive director of the Lutheran high school, which created its online school last year.
"To keep technology away from kids while they're going to school, when they have it in every other part of their lives -- it just doesn't make sense."

Online College Rankings 2007
Online higher education is growing, but a lack of transparency is preventing it from reaching its full potential. Even though online colleges are now receiving increased respect from top employers, diploma mills and the like limit the prestige of a legitimate online degree. We think more transparency is a good thing; a set of objective, quantitative rankings — however imperfect — should help shed some light on the relative attractiveness of the most popular accredited online colleges.

Based on the needs of the students you have recently taught or will be teaching in the future, identify an area for professional growth. For example, if your students have scored below target in reading comprehension, you may be looking for some new instructional strategies to assist students to better understand what they read. In this case, you might choose the course, Looking at Vocabulary.

Email spam report
It was brought to our attention that some rather obvious spam got through to our staff over the weekend. We have sent the offending email to our vendor for resolution.
Here is the latest stats about the mail received which is deemed good vs the junk. If you compare it to the last report in October of 2006, we are now topping 3,000,000 emails per month received with only 6% deemed good - over 100,000 per day.
We are sorry that some garbage does get through, but as you can see the task is daunting. Please communicate to your staff that we are still applying our best efforts to remove the junk, but keep all of the good email - a delicate balance to be sure.

1. Self-directed learning: you choose an area of interest for in-depth study!
2. Explore issues related to mass media while learning other important skills, such as project planning, time management, communication, evaluation and analysis.
3. “The medium is the message” An opportunity to engage in multiple media forms. (Motivated, ambitious, challenge-seeking applicants only, please.)
Student Comment:
Generally speaking, I am always thrilled when they post responses to individual lessons, obviously excited or outraged or blown away by discovering some aspect of media they hadn’t before considered. The most reactions come from the “deconstructing” unit, which covers digital manipulation, Canadian representation in the media, the language of advertising (and an essay on parity which seems to be popular). I should “save” some of the responses for future reference.

This course offers great flexibility, independence and quick feedback to the serious learner. Students are able to work on their own time, and pretty much at their own pace. Teacher feedback and assignment return is prompt, usually within 12 hours, and rarely longer than 24 hours.
Student Comment:
I liked how all of the assignments were done on the computer. I also liked how fast I would recieve my marks back. This allowed me to know what my mark was throughout the course. It was not hard communicating or asking questions and they were all very well answered. I really liked how I could work on my own time. If I was really busy I could do it at a different time.

There are a number of changes that I am looking at as I work on the ELA 20 course. I want to explore more closely the pros and cons of using the drop box rather than the discussion board that I am using now for submission of assignments. I will look at using blogs for the student journals. If I see them working well for ELA 20 (or better than what I am using for ELA A30) then I foresee changing the process in ELA A30.

That “wherever they can find it” part is what I find really intriguing. How interesting would it be to teach and encourage our students to go and find the best available information out there? I mean, isn’t not doing that really doing a disservice at this point? It’s still such a difficult concept for a lot of teachers to embrace, this idea that there might be better information, better learning outside of the traditional structures.

Bated Breath
I Love the internet...here is the answer to my own question.
"Bated breath" has been around a long time. Here's the first cite in the Oxford English Dictionary: "1596 Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice i. iii. 125 'With bated breath, and whispring humblenesse.'"
Bated-- "To moderate or restrain (a variation of "abate"): to bate one's enthusiasm, and, "to lessen or diminish," and "with bated breath - in a state of suspenseful anticipation."
I myself like the "baited" ...you know holding a worm in your mouth trying to lure the fish in...
OK...OK it might not be as good.

Latest Drug in Middle School - Dusting
First, I'm going to tell you a little about me and my family. My name is Jeff. I am a Police Officer for a city which is known nationwide for it's Crime rate. We have a lot of gangs and drugs. At one point we were # 2 in The nation in homicides per capita. I also have a police K-9 named Thor. He was certified in drugs and general duty. He retired at 3 years old because he was shot in the line of duty. He lives with us now and I still train with him because he likes it. I always liked the fact that there was no way to bring drugs into my house. Thor wouldn't allow it. He would tell on you. The reason I say this is so you understand that I know about drugs.
I have taught in schools about drugs. My wife asks all our kids at least once a week if they used any drugs. Makes them promise they won't.
I like building computers occasionally and started building a new one in
February 2005. I also was working on some of my older computers. They were
full of dust so on one of my trips to the computer store I bought a 3 pack of DUST OFF. Dust Off is a can of compressed air to blow dust off a computer. A few weeks later when I went to use one of them they were all used. I talked to my kids and my two sons both said they had used them on their computer and messing around with them. I yelled at them for wasting the 10 dollars I paid for them.
On February 28, I went back to the computer store. They didn't have the 3 Pack which I had bought on sale so I bought a single jumbo can of Dust Off.
I went home and set it down beside my computer. On March 1st, I left for work at 10 PM. Just before midnight my wife went down and kissed Kyle goodnight. At 5:30 am the next morning Kathy went downstairs to wake Kyle up for school, before she left for work. He was propped up in bed with his legs crossed and his head leaning over. She called to him a few times to get up. He didn't move. He would sometimes tease her like this and pretend he
fell back asleep. He was never easy to get up. She went in and shook his
arm. He fell over. He was pale white and had the straw from the Dust Off can coming out of his mouth. He had the new can of Dust Off in his hands. Kyle was dead.

Jobs, Dell appraise technology, schools
In a joint appearance in front of executives and educational technology advocates at a statewide summit in Texas Feb. 16, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Dell CEO Michael Dell shared their views on the role of educational technology in preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century. Jobs, who says schools should operate more like businesses, criticized teacher unions for exerting too much control over the personnel process. Dell talked about the importance of 21st century skills and highlighted a new web site where Dell customers, including educators, can make suggestions for improving the company's products and services.

Cyber Tracker saves time...............No. All the information I need is on WebCT and an Excel spread sheet. Inactivity can be determined using Track Students in WebCT. I record midterm and final due dates as a matter of course when a student registers. The record of emails is fine, but my problem is lack of progress, not lack of logging on so I wind up writing my own emails anyway.
One thing that has added to my work is that we no longer get notice when a student is added to a class. It is usually only when a student I don’t recognize starts sending emails or when I go into the manage students section of WebCT that I notice I have a new student.
It would be great if Tracker could send an email automatically when a student is added or deleted.

Now that we are established as a school I think our biggest challenge is to stay on the radar of teachers and students. We must continue to sell ourselves and our product to the students and the community at large. Only that way will our enrollment remain viable.
That said, we have to make sure our “product” stays current. More time and resources must be allocated not only to course additions, but renewal.

Too many links it drives me mad.
The following is the start of an executive summary of a proposal we have put together and I will just use it for this example
Our initial concept involved developing a program to track students enrolled in Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School. Web CT, the learning management system this program was designed to accompany, does have student tracking capabilities however, it is designed to work primarily with semester based courses.
Doesn't a blog entry with so many links make you mad. I end up away from the original entry and off surfing somewhere else. So in my blog entries I try to make my point and then place a single link to the point of interest.
Virtual school a victim of its own success
An Oregon state law threatens to curtail the growth of a popular online charter school. Since it launched less than two years ago, enrollment in the Oregon Connections Academy has swelled to more than 1,200 students from across the state; problem is, a state law passed after the school's inception requires at least half of a school's student population to live in the district where it is based. State officials say when the school's contract is up, they will require it to comply with the law--setting up a legal showdown if the statute isn't changed.

GM and Computers
For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release
stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics
(and I just love this part):
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Macintosh! would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation"
warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.
Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate - their computer

"She knew he spent a lot of time on the computer in his bedroom but had no idea he was filling an online journal with hate-filled rants and violent fantasies. "We found there was a little change because he was a little quieter, but he still was normal at home, living with us upstairs, [sleeping] in his bedroom. It's not that he was alone in the basement or anything," she said."

Each year in the second semester I spend some time reviewing your courses with each of you. Last year we had a personal interview and talked about what level your course was on the four level scale. This year I am one year older and do not wish to take up your time with the personal interview. I am going to do a virtual tour of your course, but to do this I need each of you to complete the following questions:
Physics Grade Eleven and Twelve Answers

The course provides students with the opportunity to become informed about key concepts in physics and become independent learners as they learn at their own pace. The illustrations and links to websites provides students with a visual representation of many of the key concepts that are studied and the detailed solutions to questions that are provided allow students to develop their problem solving skills along with their critical thinking.

Tracking of students in the course is important as are referrals. However I have found that the process that we are presently working on to be a rather cumbersome one and also stressful whereby a lot of time is devoted to this process as opposed to focusing our attention on those students that are actually willing to do the work. The attempt to streamline and standardize everything may be of benefit to some but flexibility and efficiency must be built into the process. I guess what I am trying to say and as I have already indicated, I am rather frustrated right now with the tracking system that we are presently pursuing as it has created additional work for me. Having said that I also understand and appreciate the amount of time and effort that has gone into formalizing this process and from an administrative perspective it may have made things simpler.

Email from my wife
Subject: FW: To my darling husband.
Before you return from your overseas trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway. Fortunately not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.
I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway accidentally pushed down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pick up fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your car.
I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me. You know how much I love you and care for you my sweetheart.
I am attaching a picture for you.
I cannot wait to hold you in my arms again.
Your loving wife.
P.S. Your girlfriend called.

Your eyes will fall out of your head.
Now this game will drive you wacky

I know a lot of this didn’t apply to me, yet, but it made me think about my course design. I know if I did it again, there might be some things I would have done a bit differently but I am pretty pleased with how it came out overall. Once I have some students in there I’ll have a better idea of where I screwed things up, and have to change things. I got a lot of great advice from the people in the pod. It made it soooo much easier. I talked to many teachers and got them to tell me about what works and what doesn’t, and what they prefer and why. It was awesome.

Moving Schools Forward–A School 2.0 Project
So here is one of the burning questions in my brain these days: How do you take a fairly “typical” school that is currently steeped in a 20th Century model of teaching and successfully move it forward in a systemic way toward a more relevant 21st Century, or, if you will, School 2.0 model that fully takes advantage of a more connected, collaborative, creative world?

Here you have an opportunity for ongoing conversations with educators across the country focused on improving the quality of professional development. Many of us are stumped when asked pointedly by a policymaker or school funding representative "How have our students benefited from the latest professional development initiative?" We still have a great deal to learn about designing, implementing, and then documenting the results of professional development efforts.

They are all fantastic, take your pick. The reason I say this is because, I've created a lesson template that all of my lessons follow. Research has shown that interface continuity has a tremendous impact on the online user ... it establishes students self-efficacy in the course, and creates a feeling of comfort because they are familiar with their "screen real-estate" ... they know where everything is, and where everything is suppose to be. (I know, long answer)
