Digital Media Scoring Guides
Digital Storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and engages a palette of technical tools to weave personal tales using images, graphics, music and sound mixed together with the author's own story voice. Digital storytelling is an emerging art form of personal, heartful expression that enables individuals and communities to reclaim their personal cultures while exploring their artistic creativity. While the heart and power of the digital story is shaping a personal digital story about self, family, ideas, or experiences, the technology tools also invite writers and artists to think and invent new types of communication outside the realm of traditional linear narratives.

Wow, Teachers are Smart!
I have to admit, talking to a couple hundred K-12 educators scared the hell out of me. I am used to higher education and corporate audience so my talk as the lunch keynote for the Third Annual One to One conference was well outside of my comfort zone. Turns out we are all in the same boat - huge challenges in driving acceptance, adoption, and diffusion of innovation within our environments.

One thing that keeps worrying me.
I guess what concerns me the most about trying to fix all the not-working-so-well things about schools is not that I fear we cannot fix them.
It's that we can, but we aren't, or won't.
Bud the Teacher: One Thing That Keeps Worrying Me
I liked this comment as well.
Oh, this is exactly correct. We know what is wrong, and we could sit down and make it better. The problem will always be dealing with the people who will lose something if we do so. From the teachers who will lose that unit they love to do in a curriculum re-alignment, to the administrators who may find their job now requires something different than what it currently does, to the people in the community who may find they will need to invest in the schools to make them something better.
Never mind the political fallout if we start to ask states to move away from the Carnegie unit, dealing with NCLB, and determining what we even want our children to learn. To do all this will require someone to step up and ask people to dream and do something amazingly new...and that's scary. Most people probably would prefer to stay safe. Leaders don't last long.

Teachers are Experts
For a little while I’ve puzzled over how to get more of my colleagues engaging in online learning and using Web 2.0 tools to share their tools and expertise. I know I’ve only been involved in educational blogging for under two years but my view has always been that if an ordinary, average teacher without any prior claim to fame (and only one recent step up the leadership ladder in twenty years of teaching) can use these tools and so quickly utilise them for my personal professional learning, then anyone can do it. So why aren’t teachers coming online en masse and collaborating and sharing their obvious expertise?

Digital Whatevers
Some very poignant observations - the digital immigrant tag can be a cop out for many educators. Interestingly, the enhanced version of Karl Fisch’s Did You Know? is what most of the preschool people were talking about at the end of the session as compelling evidence for education keeping pace. And hey, if an interactive whiteboard gets them started and envisioning the possibilities, what’s wrong with that? Better than digital immigrant denial.

Wearable code
The T-shirts and tote bag that Julia R. Vallera created as part of her course work at Parsons the New School for Design hold an open secret.
What appears to be merely a cool design is actually a diary entry, locked within a special barcode that can be read by a cellphone.
The code presents “my private thoughts and writing, kind of exposed in a really public way, but contradictorily, being still private because its encoded,” Ms. Vallera said in an interview.

Will e-learning make teachers redundant?
Will e-learning make teachers redundant? : Mail & Guardian Online
Dear Administrator
I am writing after an exhausting year of instructing my students. I want to thank you for hiring me and keeping me in this position. I have been teaching this same content for the past 5, 10, 15 years ( you choose). Each year it gets harder and harder to teach these kids. They come to school tired from all the activities they are involved in. They are tired from staying up late watching TV, I don’t even have time to watch TV! I don’t understand why they are not doing well on their tests. I know my content, I know my students from 5, 10, 15( again you choose) years ago did much better on these tests. I don’t think the tests are testing what I have been teaching, but rather testing students who are not interested in learning the way they have in the past.

Online communities transform teacher development
Teacher professional development is undergoing a radical change for the better, thanks to the development of new online professional “learning communities” that give educators the chance to network and exchange ideas with their peers at their own convenience. Members of these online communities also have “just in time” access to instructional tools such as videos, tutorials, and other advice whenever they need it.

Why Nerds are Unpopular
Thank to Stephen Downes for pointing me towards this article.
When we were in junior high school, my friend Rich and I made a map of the school lunch tables according to popularity. This was easy to do, because kids only ate lunch with others of about the same popularity. We graded them from A to E. A tables were full of football players and cheerleaders and so on. E tables contained the kids with mild cases of Down's Syndrome, what in the language of the time we called "retards."
We sat at a D table, as low as you could get without looking physically different. We were not being especially candid to grade ourselves as D. It would have taken a deliberate lie to say otherwise. Everyone in the school knew exactly how popular everyone else was, including us.
I lost something very important to me
So they did a “sweep” with metal detectors at a middle school on the Upper West Side of New York City on Thursday and the result wasn’t pretty. Out of 900 plus students, 404 cell phones were “confiscated” from the kids, some of whom were put to tears over the incident. About 70 iPods and a couple dozen other assorted devices were nabbed as well, all causing some parents to threaten lawsuits and the building principal to avoid questions at the end of the day.
