Online Student Time Management

The most powerful technique that we use to help online students understand time management is the students’ own words. Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School surveys their students yearly and when students are asked to comment about their cyber experience, many comment about time management. We share these comments with our student body.
One student (2007-2008) stated that cyber school " has helped me to realize that time management is vitally important. I have to learn to be more disciplined. It took me a while, but I am finally starting to figure that out and I believe that will be very important when I get to University."
The WebCT tools that are used to assist the online students in their time management would be the calendar that posts suggested deadlines as well as some definite deadlines, the grade book which displays the completed and non-completed assignments and the course mail system which allows the instructor to interact and relay information to the students about their progress. There is also the tracking tool that shows the progress to the students as they work their way through the course. The tool outside WebCT that has been built to support the school and assist the students in time management is an automatic weekly email system which sends the students some suggestions on their progress based on their length of time in the course. Record cards are also a technique for helping a student understand the importance of managing their time well.
In a K-12 school the instructor is still the most powerful tool in effect to change students’ behaviour. Frequent contact and interaction will build a relationship with the students. This relationship will make the students more willing to ask when confused and make them less willing to allow themselves to fall behind.
The ultimate technique to make students understand the importance of time management is a failing grade and then allowing the students to restart their course.
Below are a few more quotes from students...
"Deadlines should be more enforced. A student should be allowed to work as fast as possible, but for some students (maybe only a few) no deadlines are a hard thing to organize. I realize that the recommended days are in the student’s personal calendar, but sometimes a concrete deadline is a good kick in the pants to get someone like myself back on track”
“Cyber is a little difficult to keep up with if you're not diligent. I think that there should be something that says that you have to be done something by a certain date more often. Like every month or so, not every half a semester.”
“It's nice when you get a test graded fast. It keeps you wanting to keep going to finish your course.”

Tell us Something ... Part 15 (Last Part)

We asked...Tell us something. A neat story about you in the cyber school. Something we could have done better. Something that we could use on our website to sell the cyber school idea. A tip to a cyber school employee. A thank you to a cyber school employee. A reason for the cyber school to continue. A reason for the cyber school to close. A neat website.

I like Cyber School!

i love the fexibility cyber school gives me

I am in grade eight at the moment and taking my grade nine math. I am glad that I am taking cyber math because it will help free up my schedule in high school and I will be able to take more classes. I'm happy that I am able to do this.

A cool website

cyber school is alright they should change up the fonts make a like cool, cartoonish, bubble letter theme going on to the website not kiddish but it looks so boring. im not complaining but i think that would make it better.

it would be good to have a conversation with the teacher at some point

Story: I love to do my course with friends so that it is way funner! Something to do better: before the assignment you explain how to do the assignment. The only thing is that some of the things in the assignment are not in the before assignment. To continue: it gives you a chance to explore something new and if you do not like it you only have to do it the one time. To close: It is too easy to cheat on assignments and exams. Also, you dont ALWAYS have to do it so it is easy to fall behind.

This course is better than math 90 because math is too hard to learn on the computer because of explanations.

Thanks to the teacher for all the help they gave me

All types of equations that will be on an assignment should be well explained and further with more hands on examples to help get the fact through the students heads.

it would be nice if we could get more updates to how far your falling behind if you were not doing your assignments date to date

Cyber School is a neat way to work online and do your courses online, without having face to face school

cyber school should continue because it gives the students more options plus its an hour less i have to spend at school!

cyber school was a great experience, i was able to focus more and raise my mark, because i could learn the imformation and then write the test right away

I think that cyber school is a great opportunity for students to upgrade their mark or if they have failed a class, to take it over again, or if they just need an extra credit and there time table is full.

Cyber school is just good to have. Especially when you have a hard time getting up to go to school, or work part time. I hope it stays for good.

If you had other options for learning. ex. more practice questions it could make it much easier for a student to comprehend the questions being asked of them

Keep the awesome teachers around; the ones that actually offer help and give help when it is asked for...(like the CE and some of the other courses too). Get rid of the teacher(s) that doesn't help at all (yes I do remeber from three years ago). We all ended up asking the Math teachers at our school.

I think it would be an awesome opportunity if people could do cyber school over the summer months. This would allow them to take many more high school courses.

Tell us something ... Part 14

I dont have a story but i feel that it helps in being more indepented when it comes to working and learning how to do things by yourself. because in university you do not get that full face to face relationship with your teacher

i honestly feel that when i learn on here it isn't explained well enough for most poeple. what i learn doesn't stick with as well as face to face and i dont remember it later. i still do very well in my cyber classes but that is in math and i am naturally good at that so its not too hard for me to figure out dispite most of this. i basically took this online cause in class it is really just a wste of my time to sit through the entire lesson if i already get it and then have to do the hw after. with this i get an extra spare which is nice especially when i have sports u dig. one thing that i think could realistically be improve is the amount of downtime on the site but im sure you're already trying to improve that. I like cyber school even if its not the greatest right now im sure it will improve over time. thanks.

Cyber school is fine for a certain learning stlye. It is not the style I have.

i dont like that if you have a question you sometimes habve to wait a whole day to get that answer.

The only reason I did not like it was because they don't really explain things clearly to you and you have no one on one help with any of it

I didn't want to be in cyber school, but when I did it and finished my course early, I had a spare for the rest of the semester, so that was awesome. Also, I think cyber school gives you more freedom and that definately helps with preparing you for University.

everything is up to my standards. im enjoying cyber school cause i can do work on my own time and do as much or little as i want

Well I have a suggestion, for your survey you had some difficult questions, like question eleven, Cyber school is tremendous for students who have attendance problems or who lead very busy lives and do not have the time to go to school regularily, or students who have health/mental health problems, it is a wonder. But to ask if everyone should take the course is difficult because some people really do no thave enough self discipline for it, but when I said "no" to the answer, I felt like I was insulting cyber school when I wasnt. And question number 3 when it asked if you would take the course again, I said "no" because I am graduated after this last class, its not because I dont want to, its because I simply dont have the time to do more high school if i want to go to college. Anyways I hope that you guys continue with Cyber School because it is a great thing for the students that really need it. Keep up with the good work.

I think it would be better if you gave better examples, instead of just giving us the question and the answer, give us step by step instructions without skipping any steps like in some of the lessons do. Thank you

it is good to go your own speed in the class! I also get to start partway through the semester so my courses aren't very full for part of it!

iunno i dont really have much to say . just more communication between the teacher and students

im sorry i have just started the program and dont have any stories yet

I already previously posted this but i will say it again just for your benefit. I am put on a waiting list, i have yet to be able to access the cyber school. That is absolutly insane, you mean to tell me that there is no room in a invisible school because of a invisible waiting list. It is cyber school, there is plenty of room in the cyber world. Some students just do not have the time to wait for a ridiculous waiting list. Some students need to get this education done and over with now, they need to graduate, they need to redeem themselves in a failing class some students may just need to get over bearing parents off thier backs. Parents who will not give that child a break because they failed math or english or whatever. Students have too much on their plates to worry about with school being shoved down thier throuts daily, demanding family and friend troubles and activities. It is obvious students cannot rely on much anymore but when a cyber world school tells them that they muct wait that is absolutly sickinging. Students do not have time to wait for a spot to clear on a invisible waiting list. Thats what you need to change, apparently you need more space in your school because a waiting list is just going much much much too far.

I think you guys should write out stuff in bigger font because on the little screens at my school it is hard to se if it is a addition sign or a devision sign. Other than that it is great!

well i think that you guys who make this site, are doing really good, dont close it caue christian kids can learn more things about god doing the cyber school course i think hehe,

some things were made too complex. for the yellow box steps, i usually have my own crazy simple way of doing it but the question made me do it the way cyber school taught. marks are lost often at those places.

well i think you guy's should have all type of thing's on here like Math and more brain exersize's and that's about it

I like cyber school because you can learn at your own pace, and not getting rush all the time.

You log onto the computer and you do your work.

the cyber school would not let me on sometimes

You should be able to submit answers one at a time in case you are not sure if you are understanding correctly.

More interaction with the teachers and students needed

My finger hurts...

i think that the very first time that i joined which was this year. i was very confused with all your tools and what not. it was hard to understand some on things that we had to do.

Hmm. The only thing I could think of is finding a way to keep us motivated and active and regular with cyber school.. I mean, I'm behind right now, just because I haven't spread out the time I need to do things. I don't have any ideas on how to do that however, I'm sure it's a big question for you guys too.

I can't ever get a good hand with my school work, but don't feel beat down, I can't get the help that I need from the face to face teachers either.

well for one, I think that the teacher should awnser back so the students more quickly. and i love cyber school because i can stay at home with my son and still finish my schooling so in my opionin i think cyber school should continue but the teachers should awnser back more quickly because mine doesnt and he puts me behind!

I haven't done the course yet so it was premature to do this servey.

Cyber school is a HUGE help when it comes to students like me who need some flexibility with courses because of elite sports. Sometimes it is really hard to fin the time to get homework done for one specific day. Cyber school allows the flexibility to get it done on my own time.
Make the site a little more interesting to look at, I get bored just sitting here looking at a plain site that doesn't really peek my interests. You should give it more flare, probably not so BLAH looking, if you understand what I mean.

I think that the teachers expect to much of an amazing answer... most people that are taking this that i know dont like school and need to take it at their own pace. so i dont understand why they wanna make it so complicated

make sure everything is in the pages for the review

I e-mail my cyber school teacher, but I never get a reply. I don't know if he isn't getting my e-mails, or if I'm contacting him in the wrong way. It's frustrating and worrying, and I don't like the way of contacting teachers.

the cyber school should stay open because it provides students with a great learning oppurtunity

I just started Cyber School the other day, and i found it a bit difficult to understand where you get your course or that i needed to actualy finish the Prepartation Course before i got my actual course outline. It also confused me a bit when it said start your calandar for Mathematics 90. I signed up for Math A30 and thought i had been taking Mathematics 90. I got a little freaked out when i thought i signed up for the wrong course. I like Cyber School and think it should keep running because i do have a flexible schedule and it allows me to work freely.

A neat website.. uhm... Nexopia, Facebook, Myspace.. any one of those horribly addictive cults =] FPS Banana is really cool too... It's all for First person shooter games (which are surprisingly awesome, and I'm a girl, and I love them!).. But yeah. =]

it is sometimes hard to understand the examples in math

Well all I can say is that the time spent waiting for the semster to begin is alittle long (2-3 working days) I know you guys/gals got alot of work, but waiting is the hardest thing to do.
This is a great way for people who enjoy electronics and computers to get an education!
Since i'm still in grade eight and at an elementary school i'm glad that there is cyberschool. that way i can advance in math and get an actuall challenge unlike i would have been if i had taken grade 8 math this year.

You should add more options in the registration sheet, like when it says what date would you like to register have it say between what days would you like to start your cyber school course. And there are a few other tweaks in the registration but I don't remember them.

i thought that cyber school was good.

It was rad

There is little learning involved, just assignments and tasks

A word from a Cyber Math Man. (Gr.8) I like Cyber School a lot but, it needs to improve in many ways, the web design is sometimes a little out dated, the chat rooms could have PICTURE emoticons, updated course system, a better who wants to be a millionaire game and more practice games. Not including that, Cyber school rules and keep up the good work!
nanananananananananananananaBATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Thankyou to C Binsfield for being understanding of working 2 jobs and having no days off so he understood the little amount of work i could accomplish some nights.

I love math

cyber school is a neat way to upgrade ur marks. My marks in cyber school is way much better than face to face school marks. cyber school should continue at least for another couple of years.

This cyber school is awesome, we never had it where I moved from(sedgewick, ab)!

Cyber School is a neat way to learn all your next year skills this and and the next year, learn the year after next year's and etc.

Me and my other friends were bored one day so we were looking through all the people who we could send e-mails to, and we found this girl that used to go to our school that was our friend but we didn't keep in touch with her and now we are good friends again.

Just a tip to the cyber school employees/teachers- don't get so mad at us when we haven't been on Cyber School for 9 days! We have our own system of learning, and we are BUSY!

I like peanuts... They are nice... I like the way they can be made into butter... But peanut butter tastes bad on potatoes... I wonder why that is... Normal butter is fine on potatoes... A tip to a cyber school employee. A thank you to a cyber school employee. A reason for the cyber school to continue. A reason for the cyber school to close. A neat website.

My wrist hurts. does that count for something?

Cyber school is a neat way to gain a new experience in learning, comunitcation with the teachers and cyber school staff is very good.

Thanks to cyber school employee, for helping me go through the course.

Cyber school is a great way for a person to receive credit for classes by not having to go to face to face school. It is good for kids who don't fit tin and like working alone.

Hey this is my first year taking cyber school. So it was a little harder to answer this survey!! But I did the best I could!! Anyways I think cyber school is a neat idea and I am really looking forward to starting!! Thank for this opertunaty for this experience!!

I did math tests.

In my situation it usually took a few days for my teacher to respond to my question. I took Math B30 on cyber school and without an answer you could be doing the problems all wrong. I had to work on cyber school during christmas holidays due to other commitments in my first semester. The down side on working on my class during the holidays was ,of course, the teacher is on holidays as well and did not respond until 2 weeks or so had past. I think if the christmas holidays are included in the 150 days then teachers should have to work then also or cyber school should be closed during the holidays and the 150 days extended after the holidays. I think that since cyber school is an online course that teachers should make notes that are printer friendly. I found that I would spend 1 to 2 hours copying notes. For cyber school to be better I think there needs to be more and better communication beteween students and teachers.

This is my first time using Cyber School, so I dont have any stories to tell about. But so far i really like Cyber School.

I found the beginning - becoming registered and having to take the prep. course before you're even entered very confusing and not straight forward.

HAHA cyber school is sooo confusing!!

I like cyberschool. It is really flexable and i get more done in one hour on cyberschool then i do at face to face school.

The preparation course is extremely annoying to retake every time an online course is taken. Also, I could not register for another class while in the system with another class without re-registering and having to take the preparation course over. On another note, certain classes have the marks too heavily weighted on certain things. During one course, none of the daily assignments were marked. Only the unit exams and final were marked and consisted of very few questions. This made it extremely difficult to do well in the class because every mark on an exam was worth a fair bit of the overall course mark.

I just started cyber school, so far, all i can say is it's good. Students can learn how to study individually..that's all.

I am taking a couse and I think it would be better if the learning materials had better expilnations and details.

I think that you need more explanation for your courses. A cool website is www.google.com

Well, I guess what I would like to say is that it has helped me to realize that time management is vitally important. I have to learn to be more disciplined. It took me a while, but I am finally starting to figure that out and I beleive that will be very important when I get to University.

Thank you for letting students get ahead a bit and let them have flexible hours. It really helps, and Is a good way of managing time.

Well, first off, I shouldn't even be in cyber school. If I had gone to a different school I wouldn't have to be in this course, and I'd actually be passing Christian Ethics. I think that I find it hard to keep up, and I'm also supposed to be taking this year long too, so in the long run, I'll probably fail and I'll have to take this course all over again. But no, instead, I'm just going to move to another school so I won't have to.

you need to have a tutorial session at the beginning to help learn all the parts of the program

I would prefer if on every course they set deadlines, and if you dont meet them, you get late marks off because otherwise it is so easy to get behind.

i really think that cyber school should continue. I has helped me alot this year. I am a student who has alot of trouble getting to school or even waking up in the mornings and cyber school makes it all easier. You can work at your own pace and dont have to feel like your always behind everyone else because your working on your own. Also, the pace of the course is almost perfect. its not too fast nor too slow and being able to do your hour a day anytime you want is the best part. I'm loving cyber school and so are my friends. My typing is improving and i am not distracted by other students. KEEP CYBER SCHOOL and you will make alot of kids happy.

:) I LOVE cyber school

My math course that I am taking right now is not well enough explained, and my mark has dropped by a lot, because I do not understand what I am doing.

Cyber school is awesome. The only thing I recommend is the looks. Perhaps they could become customizable in the future. Colors and such. And also I like a bit more interaction with the student and teachers. A bit more encouragement perhaps?

nothing really specific. i'm in a hybrid right now which was really cool to do along with in class stuff. i am trying to take an english online because it conflicts with in school schedule.

I personally don't like the cyber school program. Yeah I like that I can print my assignments off the net but yet I can just take home the textbook that the regualar math class has. ALSO, I like the face-to-face class because assignments are due on the next day and students are pushed more to finished their work. Yeah the cyber school allows the student to have flexibility and also to be responsible for their work and stuff but face-to-face gives the student due dates. Well... for me I like that. Now I didn't finish my grade ten because I did't have to have my work done by a certain time or day. I don't know I have alot more to say but I just can't word them the way I want to. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment.

The first course that I took online was creative writing and I had a lot of difficulty with it and ended up dropping the class. I was a little dissapointed becuase I had enjoyed it I just didn't have the amount of time required. But I am not taking MathA30 as an up grade and I find it much more enjoyable and I like that i can work at my own pace without interuption. My teachers at school also offer help for and students that are taking classes online and have any questions. This is also extremely helpful.

make it take a shorter time for the kids to start up with the cyber school

make it so once you sign up it doesnt take so long to start

I think the registration is a bit too complicated. It has been 5 days and one of my friends still can't take the preperation course and doesn't have the confirmation e-mail. Also, when I was registering, it said I wrote down grade 7 instead of grade 8 by accident. I thought instead of me reregistering and correcting my mistake having to wait another 1-2 days was unnecessary, I thought this because if you guys knew I was in grade 8, couldn't you have corrected the mistake yourself rather than put me through a bit more trouble. Anyways, that was my only problem so far.

Cyber School is awesome and it teaches you to learn on your own which makes you better at independent things.

All the Cyber School teachers are their to always make sure i'm logging on and letting my parents know what i have done... that motivates me to finish

i honestly just been put in this class because i wasn't doing very well in a face to face kind of teaching but i find it better that way and that my absences were not very good so i know this will be my last time to make sure i stay in school.

I dont think that there could have been anything done differently from my point of view.

I think it is a great oppurtunity for students to learn independently, which of course is great preparation for university.

My teachers have been very patient. Everyone is very polite and nice to me, which is appreciated when learning how to do an online class.

cyber school is flexible and helps me to learnafter school whith a job

I just want to say that I am very excited that I found about Cyber school because I never knew about it before. I always wanted to take classes online and it's the best. I just want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who is a part of the SCCS, you guys really make it easier for people who are looking for a little more. Thanks again!

I had a friend, from when I was little and had not talked to or seen in eight years, and I just re-met her on cyber school this years. It lets me keep in contact with my friends when I can't aways see them. The classes are better then being in a class room.

i think that there should be more notices sent out to everyone and specific due dates for each assignment to keep people on task, because without specific due dates there is alot of procrastination because it doesn't NEED to be done and then it is all done poorly in the last few weeks instead of properly like it could have been done if each assignment was done one at a time.

cyber school is the best site you guys should continue it..but i dont know whats the next step in here

i like cyber school because you can work on it at various points of the day and you always know that their is something to do. i love how you can work at your own pace some days i dont feel like working so i dont, but then others ill do 4 quizes and assignments in a day

Well this is my 5th cyber school course in 5 years...Grade 12 now, took my first one in grade 8 (math 90). It's worked really well so far for scheduling flexibility, 6th classes, and classes not offered at my home school, such as Info Pro. Cyber school can be taken in any grade if the student has the will power to do the course material. It's this will power that'll give them a good mark & prepare them better for the world after grad.

I dont have much to say i havet even started my coarse yet. I've never been too keen on coputers but this seems verry simple and hopefully will be benificial and inprouve my computer confidence.

I think that the marking scheme should be more legible...like it should be more straight forward with just an overall average

This is my first time taking cyber school. It isn't that bad, a little hard to understand.

its good because i can take, and upgrade, a class while working fulltime.

something you guys should ahve done would ahve to be try to make it less confusing . I mean ... not having way to many different links and more links added to that, and your getting way of track of what you were trying to start in the first place . I'm only answering a few of these, So a way for cyber shcool to keep on continueing would ahve to be , It help a lot of people . It's on your own time , shows responsibility , and understandment of yourself , i think . and helps in so much other ways , independment . Many many reason . Helps people stay caught up in school . ..Cyber school should never close . It's helps to many people . and if it just up and left one year, we'd be pretty effed . : D

Textbook Publishing in a Flat World

If the student wants to buy a printed copy of the textbook, it will be printed on demand by the company and provided in color for one price or black and white for a lesser price. For the student who prefers to listen to the book on an MP3 player, audio versions will be available too. Each format will have its own cost structure, but on average, it'll tally up to about $30.

Tell us something ... Part 8

A neat website.

well I just started, and i really don't understand your system... like, where is my homework? all I get are useless tabs I JUST WANT TO DO MY HOMEWORK AND GET OUT OF HERE

Well Cyber School is awesome. It's not just an idea, it a reality. I enjoy taking classes in cyber school. It prepares me better and gives me more knowledge. It's easy for me because of it flexibility. I like it more because this helps me to get out of high school in four years, not to be there for five or six years. Thanks for people who are helping us. Thanks a lot.

With the course-load of face-to-face school, it would be helpful if the cyber courses were to be the same length as a semester. It would also be helpful if you could access the course during the summer holidays to get a bit of a start.

I have yet to start my cyber school coarse but so far the interaction with my teachers has been great! I think stundents and teachers should consistantly be communicating with one another!

Cyber school should contine to run because it gives people who have scheduling issues at school a chance to take the classes they want to take.

I feel that cyber school should continue as a learning institution because it enables students to have a more flexible schedule, and to develop better homework habits.

Ive only been in this cyber school class for a little while, over the time ive loved this course and it better prepares me for it, i can work better off alone because i ahte being over controlled by somebody else. I do not know why,its sjtu a suggestion and an opinion i put together but over the time ive learned alot and ive put more effort into the class then any other face to face class i like this cyberschoo class alot more becuase it prepares you,you use your mind, lots of thinking, and puts you and i know i can achieve this class if i put the effort and time into this class i dont tihnk there is anything that should be changed there is no more i can say except this is an awesome idea, and i thank the principal at Bishop murray Highscool for telling em this because its easy and it better prepares me:)

Cyber school lets me do things at my own pace. It allows me to grasp the concept better and easier at my own pace, unlike classes in school. You move along at the teacher's pace for the class

a cyber school course know as info processing 10 is by far the most stupid non useful class i have ever seen and done. it teaches basically NOTHING and has helped me 0% in my goal to graduate gr12. this course keeps giving trick questions and asks things that were not told to me in the quiz preperation. i still cannot take this course seriously due to the lack of teachin it seems to be giving me. i have heard nothing from the teacher and i still have no idea what this class is trying to teach and i have been workin on it and have completed almost all of my tests. the person who designed my course because much does not make sense....sorry thx for reading

I started cyber school because I thought it would be better than a face to face, with a teacher of mine. So I think cyber school should continue because it gives you more free will, and does not put pressure on you like a face to face teacher would.

will for me, cyber school it helped me a lot to understand better. because what i knew.. i took cyber shcool before and i did better for the first time but i decided to drop out my course because i had too much work in face to face shcool

i find it easier than normal math in school its more flexible and easier to do. I like it lots and hopefully im able to take itagain in the future

Honestly i had problems in actual high school but it also makes it harder to know i yuo are passing or not like 9.20 or whatecver is really hard to determine whether or not you are passing and quite frankly i like the whole letter grading system so i think if you guys did that it would help alot of people out alot better

I have not been in the cyber school community for too long, but one there's one thing I can say - I wish I had started CS earlier.

its better to have a cyber school.

umm... it's really hard to motivate yourself to do cyber school classes... I had a lot of trouble getting everything done and not rushing it.

I took cyber school 3 years ago and i Absolutly loved it. I forget who my teacher was i never actually met him but honestly best teacher ive ever had, i had a million questions ( cause math isnt my strongest area) and he answered them all . I think cyber school helps out for university because in university the class is HUGE and its not as personal and you have to learn on your own in university and with cyber school that definatly helps. ( to teach yourself) all in all i think cyber school is a great idea, ill see how this class goes and see how its changed and ill let you know forsure!

A tip to a cyber school employee. A thank you to a cyber school employee. A reason for the cyber school to continue. A reason for the cyber school to close. A neat website.

math should be so that qizes and test are always availible so that more capible students can finsh quicker

We'll cyber school is perfect for me, because i failed a couple classes and i really didnt want to go back to school. So i got a job and im doing cyber school in my spare time. Plus i do most of my work at night. it seems im more focused with less destractions around

I think that bacuase the cyber school website has been down alot this year, they should extend the working days for the students who are stuck not being able to work on it some days
It gives me a chance to catch up on tests I miss when I'm sick.(I'm sick a lot)

The cyber school is a good idea to all the people in school. you guys should let us write the test if we don't test it. you guys should sell books and pens. I thanks the people who came with thiis idea because it helps us to learn more and to do good in school. i thank all the employees. a reason for the cyber school to continue is to all the students to pass the classes in school. if the students are not doing what they should be doing on time.

Well, this is my first time taking cyber school and I haven't been doing it for a very long time, however I have found it neat in the way that through e-mail we are able to contact our teachers at any hour of the day. Through the way that cyber school is set up I believe that it is a good way to teach you independance, because you can work at any pace you like as long as you meet the required deadlines.

well u could have funner courses maybe a little easyer questions and more hands on then typing

Well it's taken me almost a month just to get started on my course because of issues with the system and then issues that I didn't have the knowledge to correct so right now I'm kind of bitter but once I get going in the course I'm sure it will become much more enjoyable.

not so much reading

I just love it

Cyber School was good for me, because I could manage everything I was doing, and there wasn't that much pressure when tests were coming up cause you could take your time. Unlike when at school, you have like 5 different projects due all on the same day in 5 different classes. This made school seem alot easier knowing that I could take my time and understand everything I was doing on here then trying to cram everything together when I'm at school listening to different teachers.

Well its fun. Its neat. I like it beacuse i can do it on my own time.

I think cyber school is not appropiate for teaching someone how to learn about certain subjects. Its easier if we have other individuals telling us what is what, and how to do things. But, this way it is harder, because we PRACTICALLY have to depend on ourselves. And therefore our park goes down lower.

cyber school is good, i am in the hybird course right now its good, but sometimes i have problems with the course at home, it won't show up and says internet explorer cant find the page.

Cyber school should continue because it gives great possibilities for students that have conflict in face to face situations at school

I don't like cyber school because i was forced to take it, the lay out of it is a little on the confusing side.

cyber school is good for students who have a hard time going to class

Well The Assistance could be one thing i dont really understand like what too do half the time its really confusing like ahh ha ha but yea more help or like guide lines you know...

Cyber school is good because it teaches computer skills, which are much needed to be taught

I think cyber school is a great online learning course for all ages.

Stupidity and the Internet

As might be expected, much of the debate focused on Nick’s core contention: the Internet is subtly molding our minds to favor brief snippets of information rather than the nuance and complexity that can only be communicated in much longer forms such as books.

Tell us something ... Part 6

Oh...so much to say...I've been on cyber school for 5 years now. I went on it because I was ahead in elementary school and needed a challenge. I did ok in my first class which was math 90. Then during grade 9, I did math 10, and Info Pro. again, I didn't do great on the math, but I really enjoyed IP. By grade 10, I was kinda stuck since I wanted to stay ahead in math, but didn't want to go in a class where I would know no one. so yet again, I did math 20. I struggled a lot with that course and I thought that that course was not set up very well...I had to get a tutor, who helped my manage to get something in the high 70's. a pretty bad mark # wise, but great considering how hard the class was. Then, in my own stupidity, I did another math online. A30, with Mr. Lapointe. What an amazing teacher. I wish I could've had him in person. He knew what he was doing, was willing to help at any time and was extremely patient with me. Finally, I went into a class and found that I was unequipted to deal with math in an in-class setting. I ended up with a 79 in an AP math class and was so upset because I had always put my less than perfect math marks up to the fact that it was cyber. I realized though that it definately had to do with the fact that I hadn't been in an actual math classroom for 4 years. Then I took Christian Ethics 20 online. That was amazing...I actually learnt more from C.E. online than anything else. A fairly large group of us took it together so we could help eachother out etc. It was actually fun. The course was fairly easy, went by quickly and was effective. Cyber has to continue, but if there is any way that it could better equip you for classroom courses, that would be great. I'm not entirely sure how that would work, but I'm sure someone could come up with something. This is my last course and I am proud to call myself an Alumni of the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School! (There's cheesy for you! haha)

last year i took math 10 and i couldn't find any of the assignments...i probably would have done alot better on the unit tests if i could have found the assignments.

Cyber school is a way to get a class done fast and easy. It may be even a class you do not like or find easy and want to fly through it.

Cyber school is not bad...I like the fact that u can work online line at anytime..so theirs no excuse to not pass..

I think that it's great that people can take courses online - no reason why. There are no improvements that I can think of.

Have fun making a better system!

Cyber school is great, especially if you're having conflicts with your schedule at school. It is not the place for procrastinators though, as it usually ends up causing a great deal of stress when the deadline is approaching.

well first of all i would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to complete math 10.it's an honour to say cyber school is a great opportunity to so many students.students should take the time to thank and acknowledge the fact the some people are trying to make a difference in further education issues.again thank you.

Cyber school is ok. I prefer taking an actual face to face class though, I just find it better, I learn better in a classroom.

IT's already great!

Instead, how about a specific thing to fix. It would be BEYOND awesome if you had a way to print off all the diagrams and what not in black and white. That way, I wouldn't have to drive around the city at the EXACT TIME OF DAY which, incidently, tends to be the ONLY TIME OF DAY I get to talk to my boyfriend who lives halfway across the country to get ink so I can print off some notes I'll need to look at over and over again even though I waste 80% of the ink on solid background colours and useless images. You don't make teachers waste ink on useless bits of junk like that, do you?

Education in five minutes...works for me.

Thanks to Stephen Downes... this made me laugh.

Online Education Assumptions

There have been two common assumptions that have been a hindrance to the development of the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School. The first is the targeted K-12 learners for the school are digital natives as explained by Prensky (2001) and what it means to teach such learners. The second assumption is that because it is an online high school, all course material and activities must happen on a computer and within a course.
Digital natives are a generation who are very comfortable using and relying on the internet and find their face to face instructors in school "frustratingly illiterate" (Levin and Arafeh, 2001, p. 32). These natives are a different type of learner than when many of the online instructors were in school and the difference must be recognized. With this statement it is also important that developers and instructors, although faced with learners who are more computer literate, cannot make the assumption that they will be versed in all technologies and tools used in the courses. This assumption will create frustration for the learner when faced with technology that they have not previously encountered. It is necessary to take the time to recognize this shortfall of the learner and resolve it with instructions. Knowing your targeted learners should dictate how much instruction is necessary and a continuous review of the learner's skills will make it easier to avoid making dangerous assumptions regarding their abilities.
The second assumption that all work must occur on a computer within an online course is a hindrance because it removes some very valuable learning experiences. An example of this was in a creative writing course. Learners were asked to write a poem regarding what they see outside. The instructor took a digital picture of the scene outside the window and placed it within the course. It would have been just as easy to get the learner to stand up and walk to a window and look. We are caught in the assumption that in an online course all content and material needed to complete the course is to be found within the website of the course. One of the strengths of an online course is that it is online and is being taught within the largest library in the world. As the administrator for the Cyber School, I assumed that this was evident to all our developer/instructors and they would use this library but this again was a dangerous assumption. Many of our courses use the internet as a delivery system and for nothing else. Online courses should use the internet resources.

Is computer use changing children?

As the age at which children start to get familiar with computers and the net gets ever lower, questions are starting to be asked about what that exposure is doing to our children's brains and their ability to concentrate.

If you have been following TADO this summer you will have noticed the postings have followed a certain format. I have been posting the student's opinions to a series of questions that we ask them during the school year. I hope people have enjoyed the responses. We are about a week away from starting another school year and are developing the surveys that we will use this year.

If you have a burning question that you would like to ask k-12 students...drop me a comment and I will see if I can get it into one of our surveys.

One of my favorite things about cyber school is how respectful the interaction is. Whether emailing your teacher or posting a thread on the discussion board it is one of the only places on the internet where you don't have to worry about being flamed.

Cyber school is great for flexibility and really suits my life style.

it is hard to figure out wat i have to do on the assingments.

if you had more time

I think you should give your site more of an appealing look and avoide clashing colors. give it more of a pop out look and don't give it so much flashing images. Make it a nice layout. also adding other languages for a course like spanish, french, etc. that would be nice.

Good website. Neat and good usage of new technologies. Excellent for people who can't take face to face school.

I prefer cyber school because for some courses i catch on faster than other students so i can go at my own pace and if i need to look over a certain course more than once i can do that too so its better for me!! And i like being able to do it whenever i have time!

cyber school is a good thing because it will help you graduate on time if you really need classes. it is also a new expieriance to try. some people like it better then actual school because you can do it when ever you want to. my teacher for ela a10 seems pretty nice, when ever i have a problem with the class i can ask him and he usually has a answer for me.

i dunno

Nothing as the cyver school depends on the students own discipline but the staff did do their job.

I have already done three classes in it, and im looking forward to doing more

I didnt like cuber school because it was really confusing. Especially when you could not ask a teacher any questions.

Its all good

I used cyber school also to do Math 90 in grade eight, so I was able to complete my maths and sciences early. The course is great, and it's absolutely fantastic to be able to take a a hybrid course where you can take the course at your own pace and have a face to face teacher on demand. A neat website, just watch for spelling errors!
.
Thank you cyber for making courses easy and convient to take! Love cyber school student

great for people who need more credits but don't hve alot of time.

www.google.ca That is a very neat website.

The site is as good as it need to be.

Well, as I have just started cyber school, I don't have a lot of imput. However, I do think that most cyber school (ex: the forums) could use a better and easier navigation system.

I liked everything about it.

You need to have cyber school open over the summer. And also after my first cyber school experience, i think it would be beneficial if you would do more to encourage students to do their work.

Cyber School is amazing. I can do it when I want, and work at my own pase. It will get me ready for university by preparing for the use of computers. Thanks Cyber School!

I have taken cyberschool for three years now and have found that the work load have been tripple if not more the work load that I get in a face to face class. I like having the flexibility of cyber school and not having to be in a class where students who are goofing off taking away from my education but I find that at times the work load can be overwhelming. I know that the work load is to make sure we are actually keeping up with class but it would be nice if there could be some way to make it more like a regular class in reference to the work load (like I probably will have 5 unit tests, 1 major and 1 minor project and probably 10 quizes at the most in a face to face class where as in cyber school there can be over 50 tests/quizes and many more assignments). I don't really know what you could use on your website in order to "sell" cyber school, I think those that come to the website are pretty serious about taking it and if they are not that serious then chances are they probably wouldn't read what is put up to "Sell" the school. I think it is great that these teachers take time out of their busy day to help us students who have issues with fitting classes in (or any other situation) and I would thank them for being there to offer this oppertunity to us students. Cyber school should definately continue because it is a great way to get an education and it is a great sollution to those who need to take classes outside of school. It is also a great way of learning independently and so will help us in the future. I do not have a reason for cyber school to close, I think it should stay open/

Thank you for creating such a nice school to use for us people who have busy scheduals

I like the fact that my online teacher is someone that I know and have been taught by before. It helps me to learn and ask questions on a more personal level which, in this case of a discussion-based course, I believe is entirely essential. Having a teacher who knows you personally and how you behave as a student helps them to give more accurate grades and teaching. When a teacher knows how a student works or asks questions they can see where the student is coming from whereas a teacher who has never met the student may take a comment or habit in the wrong way.

i think cyber school is an amazing way to learn!

i have not finished my year in cyber school so i wouldnt really know much about the class.

i don't really like cyber school

i donno

Cyber Schol is a great place, don't get me wrong. However, I find that some of the tools are a bit complicated... when they do not need to be. So maybe you guys could work on that. Maybe make the homepage something even an educationally challenged person would see as easy.

So yeah... you guys just need to make this place a bit more simple. Good day.

There is WAY too much repetitive labour. At least in some courses anyway. You're not exactly learning at your own pace when you're plugging 60 boring, easy, and yet long to do questions. Ideally, there wouldn't be required daily assignments at all, just the lesson, and a bunch of questions with the answers on hand to make sure you're doing it right. Then if you already know how to do something, you don't have to waste two hours doing the aggressively annoying manual labour. I seem to remember the Math 10 course being like that... 'twas great! I learnt everything, but didn't have to waste hours proving and proving again that I've learnt it. The end of unit test should be enough for that. If people didn't learn their stuff then it'll show in the test.
it's going to help me graduate with my friends. If there was no cyber school i would have to go for another semester of high school, so I am very thankful for this new oppurtunity of education.

everything is fine.

I really enjoy cyber school but I think that the 150 day schedule shouldn't include Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. I think that you should be able to ACCESS your cyber school account on those days but they shouldn't be included as days where you HAVE to do work. It's just like you wouldn't do/ go to school on the weekend unless you had homework.

It's nice when you get a test graded fast. It keeps you wanting to keep going to finish your course. Most of the time it will take days to get my quizzes back.

I don't think Cyber School needs to do anything to change the methods. I did a lot better on here then I did on a face to face test. It helps a lot because when a teacher talks I can't really understand that but when I read things and look at them not once but twice and I could understand the questions on the page. And Thats what I needed especially for math.

Make sure the courses are up to date. Its a bit confusing to have one teachers name always mentioned in the course nots, but to have a diferent teacher teaching the course.

i think that all the cyber school classes schould be able to compile all your notes so you can print them off, to be able to read them not on the computer

Save The Internet

your have to go though to many steps to learn about it i wantted to jsut start my math 20 and i still have not startedit bec i have to go thou th prep class thing it greats really boring an time consuming other then that is is doin ok so far

its flexable.. and easier.. for me

It's really handy to be able to have all the information for the course at one time. I love that.
Theres nothing really for you to change. I liked the program for my grade 9 math and I decided to take it again for my grade 10 math.

Maybe there should be some sort of music program on cyber school.

Using cyber school before your grade twelve year is a great way to free up periods so you can take more chilled out classes, have less homework and in turn, have more fun in your grade twelve year. (If you can handle the work!)

I have only been in cyber school a week and I have found that I learn much better when I am away from the distractions of a classroom environment.

A tip to a cyber school employee. A thank you to a cyber school employee. A reason for the cyber school to continue. A reason for the cyber school to close. A neat website.

I think it's really great that this is being offered - thank you very much for making my school life, as well as the school lives of my classmates, easier.

classes to be in the same format perhaps, like having your communication icons the same and in the same spot so that when you are doing your school work you don't get confused about where things are going back from class to class. Just a thought.

I dont like how you guys having new cyber students set up. Im still having trouble and wondering what to do. If yo ucould make better instructions or a better method of instruction for new students it would be great.

Cyber is a little difficult to keep up with if you're not diligent. I think that there should be something that says that you have to be done something by a certain date more often. Like every month or so, not every half a semester. BUt I like how you can work ahead. But you get kinda of sick of sitting in front of the computer for so long. Cyber school should stay open because there are people out there that need this option. I chose cyberschool because I could learn another subject at school. Thank you to all my teachers, past and present, and perhaps future.

I am personally extremely grateful for cyber school. I've taken 6 distance education classes and 4 of those have been with SCCS. Most of the reason for this is scheduling issues because I want to take way too many classes, and part of it was taking gr. 9 math in grade 8 to challenge myself and open up an elective in high school. I'd like to thank all the teachers who put hard work into creating cyber school, it seems like it would be A LOT of work. Personally, I find it slightly harder to achieve high marks in cyber school than in a face-to-face class. This is partly because of the motivation required and partly because it is a little harder not having a teacher there at all times. Overall, it's an excellent experience and really teaches self-motivation. Thanks for putting this all together, it has really really REALLY helped me out. God bless!

If you are homeschooled, I don't think it should be required that if you are taking a cyber school course, that you have to actually go to a school to take a Christian Ethics class every semester. This is very inconvenient for someone who is homeschooled. I don't know if this is how it is now, but when my sister looked into taking a cyber class, that is what she was told. I know this is a Catholic school but for those who just need to take the class to graduate, it would be better suited, because the Public School system only has grade 12 courses so it is not possible to get all the credits that are needed.

Cyber school is a good way to learn independently

I think the information displayed on the site needs to be better organized and easier to understand because some of the assignments are kind of confusing.

Wow! I am a writer of sorts so I'm going to TRY and keep this short and simple. I took Cyber School for the first time in Grade nine and have been at it ever since (gr. 11). I took Christian Ethics on-line as well as Information Processing. After taking CE 10 and20 online, I have found that it is much easier to answer honestly in these sort of situations. Christian Ethics relates to very sensitive topics that most people do not feel very comfortable discussing in person. I think the biggest reason for this is that they are afraid people will judge them based on their answer. On Cyber, it seems like you can be more honest with your opinion because no one really knows who you are. I realize this means people can be rude and nasty a little more easily as well but I have not seen it happen very often. I think the majority of students who take Cyber school are the kind to uphold academic integrity as well. That being said, I do not think Cyber School is for everyone. I think everyone learns their own way and Cyber school is excellent for the independent learner. Basically, I think this place is awesome and the teachers really listen to what you have to say. I realize that was neither short nor simple but I did try and thank-you for listening.

Thank you for creating such a nice school to use for us people who have busy scheduals

Would You Believe Most Kids Actually Like Face To Face Communications?

There seems to be this common theme among adults who freak out about kids playing video games or surfing the internet that it's somehow a "replacement" for going outside or hanging out with friends in person. Instead, it's actually an enhancement to those things, providing another way to communicate, rather than a total replacement. Thus, those adults should be happy to hear of a new study that shows nearly 80% of kids still think face to face communication is the best. That shouldn't be surprising, but given the fear mongering stories we hear on a regular basis, it's a nice reminder that despite claims to the contrary, kids aren't as dumb as some adults make them out to be.

Techdirt: Would You Believe Most Kids Actually Like Face To Face Communications?

Ode to Joy

Learner relationships

A learner online might be involved in three types of relationships. They are; learner-learner, learner-instructor and learner-content. Although the instructor is only directly involved in one of the three types, it is the task of the instructor to provide appropriate tools and material to facilitate and promote these relationships. A well developed course will not allow a learner the ability to complete the course objectives without creating all three of the relationships.
The environment to create learner-content relationship is done long before the learner is involved in the course development stage. The instructor needs to make sure the content development is flexible, interactive and engaging enough to allow learners to build a relationship with it.
The other two relationships are created after the learner is in the course. Learner-learner and learner-instructor relationships are best created via communication tools. Communication tools are the best for creating community and a sense of belonging for the learners. A learner who is at ease with the tools will be more willing to use them. But in my experience they need a reason to use the tools. If the learner does not see the need or the value in the relationship they will not put the effort into the building of said relationship. The instructor needs to provide the tools and create valuable learning tasks to build the relationships. The instructor needs to build an approachable online persona which will promote questions from learners. Humour, prompt replies and answering all questions as if they are the best question ever asked will go a long way towards creating this. The instructor must be versed in the communication tools and the online language used in each. Rules and guidelines for the tools should promote use, not hinder them. The Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School uses the learning management system called WebCT.
Back in April of 2004 I was trying to get my certification in Webct and created a flash application which was all about the communication tools which we use in at the Cyber School. I listed the key points about each of the tools. You can see this application at:

Tell us Something ... Part 2

I think that it should done be done by semester and not 150 because sometimes you go away on weekends and don't really use your time as wisely

I found that certain courses was easier, i.e. less time consuming, because the course was in a printable format. I also liked the courses where you had a second chance on a quiz to improve your marks.

i think that cyber school is confusing everyone says oh its so easy but really its just as hard but its even harder cuz of all the emails u get

I like cyber school. It is a neat way to let people take courses to get ahead, or if they can't take a face-to-face course for any reason. My only problem with the program is that sometimes the teachers don't answer right away, and it takes two or three days. Other times, though, the teachers answered straight away, it was obvious they checked their email pretty much every day, which was really great.

I've been a student in cyber school now for 3 semesters. Some teachers have been VERY helpful and others have just had a few troubles in teaching the material clearly. Overall, however it has been a good experience.

I find cyber school hard to use and hard to find everything. I enjoy using it though because it's easier for me to access and complete assignments because I don't have a certain due date.

I think that this is a great method for people who need to upgrade or failed a class, you can interact with your teacher easy and you learn how to type better.

I think that Cyber School is an excellent way to learn. It gives you flexibility, while at the same time makes you self-motivated. You have to be determined and learn how to manage your time so that you can finish within your alloted amount of time. Thank you Cyber School for the wonderful experiences I have had.

I think that cyberschool should continue, because it forces the student to manage their own time. This is an important skill that you will use later on in life, even in University. After highschool, there is no one to tell you that you have homework to do, or you have something that is due next week. you have to be able to manage your time to get everything done. Cyberschool helps you to do this, because even though you do have due dates within the courses, you have to tell yourself to actually get the assignment done. Cyber school is a great way to learn!

A schedule that tells the student exactly what to do on each day of the year. this will help the students stay on track. in one of my classses i had a schedule like that and it was very helpful.

Cyber school has helped me graduate I am now back for my second year to upgrade my marks that could of been higher if I had managed my time better thanks to cyber school i gradutated grade 12 from holy cross highschool

Cyber School up to date has been a system that can be easily tripwired. In mathematics, you can often right click on an image and select "Save Image As" and it will give you the answer. Using Mozilla Firefox to answer the questions, you can often double click the answer box and it will automatically put out the answer for an unknown reason. Cyber School should continue, as it is very well organized and ran by the head, but some flaws should be eradicated.

I would recommend that in Cyber School, deadlines should be more enforced. A student should be allowed to work as fast as possible, but for some students (maybe only a few) no deadlines is a hard thing to organize. I realize that the recommended days are in the student calendar, but sometimes a concrete deadline is a good kick in the pants to get someone like myself back on track. However, Cyber School MUST stay in existence, as it provides solutions for many difficult scheduling problems, it allows Grade 8's to work ahead in math (a very good thing) and it caters to a learning style not approached before. It is a much better alternative to a classroom than correspondence or another similar alternative. I have taken both correspondence and Cyber School, and I greatly prefer Cyber School.

I think cyber school is a great way for a student to develop a sense of independance. I've taken a few university classes, and i believe cyber school will teach students to become more self reliant and independant in their studies! i believe it is a very benefial means of education. However, i would not recommend making it mandatory for ever student to complete one class online in order to graduate because not all students can learn by teaching themselves, or will be self motivated enough to complete the course. Thanks!

well this is my first time doing a cyber school class so i really dont know at this point

I really like the set-up on the site, It's easy to navigate around the site. I often find myself excited to go and get some work done :) Well done, good Job.

I like how you are able to go at your own pace.

I would just like to say that cyber school gave me the opportunity to finish some classes I couldn't continue in an actual school. I think it's a great way to get an education if you cannot physically or mentally be present in a school.

im not sure. you should be able to take the hole year on cyber school because i was sick and couldnt even get out of bed but i needed school but you guys didnt have it.

Cyber School has been a great learning expirience in the truest form. It has prepared me for life by forcing me to regulate my own learning, and keeping myself on track. The teachers are usually helpful, and overall I find CyberSchool much quicker than in class.

Cyber School, is more than just sitting at the computer and doing your work, its a chance for you to feel independent but yet easly access help when needed!

Cyber school is a great way of learning. It is flexible for a person's schedule, suited for a different kind of learning style then face to face, and easily accessed (if you have a computer with internet). I really like cyber school, and am hoping to take more courses online in the years to come. Thank you for all the work everyone does for cyber school!

I think the cyber school program is good as it is

Although I find cyber school extremely convenient with my schedule I find the discussion postings a waste of time . I am over the age of 40 and find it awkward to communicate with people who are younger than my children. I have found that almost no high school courses are available in print, either through you or the Saskatchewan Correspondence School. I would suggest that if an adult is exempt for certain prerequisites to courses that some of the material also be excempt. I am 44 and at this age if I have not aquired the skills of communication then there is no hope. The reason I decided to take this cyber class was because the last of my three children finished school and I decided it was my turn after spending 28 years in the retail industry to move on to something more . I did not realize that cyber school would require so much discussion and am now questioning my future in cyber school. Thank-you

Tell us something. Part 1

These are the responses...

Our school is starting something new this year which I feel would benefit many students! We now have a seperate computer lab that we are able to use for our cyber classes, and there is a teacher there if you njeed any help or assistance with whichever class you are taking!

I love cyber school...have taken every possible class I could on cyber school. I am the kind of person who dreads actually going to school, but being able to work at my own pace makes me want to do this work. If I could just be a cyber school student forever I would...lol.

I really enjoyed my History 30 course. I have always had an intrest in history and my school has never offered it. Now I know something about Canadian history.

Don't make this course so plain looking, add some color, I bet more people will want to sign up if the pages look cool.

hmmm a "neat" website eh, well, hmm, uhh, yah, about that, yah, i really got nothing, good job to the development team for making such a good site, it has really helped me!

I believe Cyberschool is well run, but i think that due dates for assignments should be enforced lightly, to keep students reminded that this is a school just like any other, but i do stress lightly.

I took cyber school because I wanted to take spanish, math 20, Biology 20, and Visual Arts all as electives, so I took Christian Ethics on cyber school. After three days in Spanish I actually dropped the class, meaning I could have not taken cyber at all, but at least it gave me a spare. Is that a good enough story?

Well, i strongly appreciate the dedication that the cyber teacher make and i think that the concept of it is brilliant. I do think however that it should be advertised better in schools, there is one time that we hear about it and that is at registration there should be more opportunities to learn about the essence of the education.

You need the program to accept answers that are correct but not what the program thinks is correct. For example, if there is a question with brackets and the answer is 42, the program should accept the answer if it is in brackets like so, (42).

A reason for the cyber school to continue... I think that cyber school is a great program. In grade eight I took math 90 and I found that I had much more fredom than everyone else doing math in a normal class. I could do three assignments in one day and none for the next week. I find it VERY important to emphansis the importance of making yourself a schedule. In grade nine I took CE10 and I found that I had no schedule whatsoever, I didn't do too great. I did find that when I did my CE20 I had a schedule and am doing great. I find that in taking two classes (CE 90 + CE 10, or HI90 + CE20) a lot overlaps and it often just seems like e refresher in some topics. SCCS should stay open because it offers classes that your school may not offer and it improves independant learning. I absolutely love the freedom of the classes andit is a great idea. It has come a long way and I'm sure that it will go further yet.

I took two courses on cyber school in grade eleven and I am taking two more in grade twelve. I think with the math course, there needs to be more communication and instructions for the student. It is the class that I have found the most confusing just because there is so much to do and it needs to be layed out in the right format for assignments and such.

I have taken two courses through cyber school, and one of the worst problems I encountered in both courses was errors in the course. I think it is just stupid that when I submit a quiz or exam I have to contact the teacher and inform them that their answers are wrong. Who's teaching who?

hopefully individual attention I will receive will help me to do better in math.

Cyber school definately works out better for me in terms of flexibility. I am very busy and this creates an enviroment for me to work on my own time and not be penalized for it. Cyber school should continue as a choice for people.

i just hope that one day students will be able to take all there classes on cyber shhool.

I have taken two courses through cyber school, and I have really enjoyed it!

I think cyber school was a good oppourtunity and I will definately take more classes on cyber in the future.

I think you should make the waiting period for the course so more people can get in faster.

My favourite course so far was Ip 10

I have enjoyed taking cyber school so far but feel that it needs alot of improvement. It is easy to work it into my busy schedual with full time work. I feel that the staff isnt as aprochable as I would have hoped, you just do your work hand it in and get a mark for it, thats it. I would like for the teachers to discuss the work that you just handed in wether you did good or poorley on it and see what your views on it where

We asked ... Part 7

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

I hope you can give us more time to finish our courses.

I am doing good in cyber school a little behind but great grades all almost at 90%.

I wish there was a wider coverage of the content as some of the quizzes are hard to answer as there is little information given in the notes.

I like the way that everything is setup

I think this course is well organized.

I think cyber-school was over-all pretty good, but I wish their was more interaction between student and teacher and other students.

It is sometimes hard to understand what the teacher wants me to do. The assignments are different things then what he teaches us in the before assignment.

I really enjoy this course the information is straight to the point and informative. The information was also presented in a way that kept it from becoming monotonous.

There wre alot of essays thorugh out this course which I soent a week or two on each and recieved a just passing grade. I am an 85 student typically when it comes to english so I am dissapointed about how hard I work for a good mark and do not get a good mark back. Also when I asked the teacher questions he gave me as little help as possible, not impressed.

The one main thing that got me behind was i wasn't always able to understand the instructions for the assignments and it would sometimes take up to five days or a week for the instructer to answer my questions. Also what I handed in and the quizzes/tests were not marked for almost months!

I thought the course was well put together, however, I believe I could have learned things more easily in a classroom setting.

I found it difficult to stay motivated and on task to get everything done on time.

Its only good for certain courses.

how do you use this both when doing math problems

We have Benedict now, not John Paul. I think you guys could afford an update or three.

You guys are doing an amazing job this offers people who cant be in a school environment for whatever reason the chance to be able to get there diploma without being in a school its awsome i love it.

This course is very well laid out and I like how I can do things at my own pace. i was unsure of the cheating question i have charts printed out, but i was told to print these out, i am unsure if this is cheating or not.

This coruse was really good for me. I really enjoy!

I think online course is important for us.

in school i always got low marks, 50's or 60's. I took a correspondents course and i got a 73, and cyber school is way easier. I took history online and i got a 70 something. (i failed it in school, and physed thats y im taking these courses) I also was barily passing physics and i have got over a 8 on every unit test. Cyber school is right for me, without it i wouldnt be getting my gr. 12. Keep up the good work.

thanks

Cyber School is always difficult and always causes stress, but without it I would never have been able to take certain classes. It was the only way my schedule would work, so for me it was a real life saver.

IF the answer keys and instruction were clearer for some topics it would make the course alot less frustrating.

I think there is lots of room for improvment through out the course. I probably wouldn't take another cyber course again.

Mrs. Sawchuk deserves a raise or something cause she did the best job I've ever seen in a CE teacher. Kudos to her for also doing AWESOME even though she was just subbing in for the teacher on mat leave. YAH MRS. SAWCHUCK!!!!!

I think this course could be better, it students weren't forced to do every single question in every single assignment. It was a hassle to do this, and I understood the concept before getting through every question.

I think we should be able to take cyber school in the summer.

Can't wait to start. Hope it's a good year.

We asked ... Part 6

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

Too much work in unit 7 in math 10...:( kinda boring too, lost interest after a while...

I don't really have any comments.

its a new experience for me but its my only shot in order for me to get my grade 12
.
I think cyber school is a great way to get an extra credit or to have a different experiance out of face to face classes.

I would really appreciate it if my teacher would actually answer my emails and help me when i need help, and he rarely does.It is very upsetting

I find some things could be better explained.Plus I believe all possible equations should be covered for that are. even if it is a variation is should be acknowledged

I think that you should be updated when there are midterm marks to be in and set dates to when you have to have things done.

It was difficult getting started and figuring out how much time i needed to spend each day. Also, i wasn't able to use the computers at school most times, which made it difficult.

I think there should be a little bit more time given seeing that most of us are just learning difficult algebra and trinominal stuff, so its hard to understand it without a face to face teacher.

It is a good experience but I think there are too many assignments per unit.

I'm not even in cyber school yet, because for some reason i am being put on a waiting list. That is completly ridiculous, there are some students that need to be able to access these courses without having to wait. It's cyber school there is plenty of room in the cyber world. There are students who do not have the time to wait for a spot to clear on a invisible waiting list. Some students need to now so that they can graduate, or get the class over with so that they can move on in school, or redeem themselves for a failing class, or just plain get there parents off thier backs. Parents who will never let the student forget that they failed Math or English or whatever. maybe it wasn't the students best subject, never was and never will be. life isn't all about Math and school, life is too short to be waiting around for a boring and stuffy education that students will probably never use again. Sure if someone wants to become a scientist or an engineer or a banker or any other job that requires alot of math, those courses should be open to those students. There should be choice in the matter, but there isn't because schools are just too busy shoving education down students throuts. It is even harder in a catholic school because not only are we choking on education but christian ethics, mass, weekly prayer and monthly confessions. To delay a students learning is ludicrious. The idea of a cyber school waiting list is absolutly proposterous. Notice that i did fairly well in english as i am refraining from using curse words and i am residing to the more subtle approach of using a wider vocabulary.

i think that cyber school is a neat way to take a class. i feel that in a face-2-face class that you dont get enough help to completly understand the course fully. with cyber school, i never needer the help that i would have needed in a regular classroom.

I like Cyber School

mr.hauber is very understanding and trusting and it is a pleasuer to have him as a counsellor, same goes for mr.nordick for my teacher.

dont make me do it. and if you dont, dont make me sit in a classroom and do it, that stuff is redundant

I like the way that it is set up. It would be better if the answers were given at the end of every assignment (daily, process, quizes) so that I can get a better understanding of what I did wrong in a question.

It is not necessary to have 30-50 questions per section.

cyber school is great cuz. if you understand it then you dont need a teacher to talk to you for an hour and have home work y ou just do it in the 15 mins that it actyle takes like im gann be 15 in fallll and talking math 30a haha so yeah cyber school ROCKS!!!

We asked ... Part 5

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

Please give better explinations and examplain everything before a test and not after.
It would be nice if you guys worded your assignments better.....I spend a few minutes just trying to understand what you want. f you make assignments, put more detail into what you want to make it easier, I really dislike having to continuously re-read what the assignment is asking for just to understand and get it done.

Cyber school is a great way to get credits you dont have room for

I think that the history 30 course is too long, not the information but having so many quizzes, assignments and major projects. It is hard to keep up especially when it takes 20 minutes to do 1 quiz. I have been enjoying the course so far though!

I just dont think that its a need to do some many poems and readings..

they dont explain things well

The biology course is not to hard it is extremely time consuming. After talking to student enrolled in inclass biology course I found out they do not do as many assignments and tests.

Some of the math equations weren't explained good or at all. I had to go to a teacher several times to get help because something wasn't explained on the website.

Good Course, but the format of some of the quiz questions was questionable when it asked for exact phrases instead of just checking for keywords or having the instructor manually correct.

This course is a great program with lots of opportunites

nothing really.. teacher was good..

This course has provided me with some valuable information, but the way it is set up isn't exactly to my liking.

i wish that i could have some help in times , some times the course`s have no instrusction and the xample are often very wrong or they are not there

teachers should be on more often for help and the examples should have more varieties

there is no point in the assignments

Its a good experience

I'm liking it alot actually.

overall it is a alright course but alot of confusion.

I just found that at the begining navigating and using all the tools and just figuring out how things work was a little difficult. I would find new assignments that I had to do all the time that I wouldn't even know about and that were due very soon after I found them. I don't like not being able to talk to a teacher face to face cause i'm someone who asks alot of questions and I found that I was having lots of trouble but no one to help me then way I needed help. But I definatly like reading better then listening to a teacher talk for hours.

keep the site more stable because there seems to be a lot of down time

THIS SITE MUST HAVE NEW THINGS LIKE: a better chat room, a more detailed process assignment and emoticons in the chat/forum room. P.S. YOUR STUDENTS TOOLS SUCK!

cyber school sucks!!!!!!! :P

students should be able to move ahead in a subject without waiting to complete the first quiz stuff because some of us need to be tutured and understand what happends next but needs help with that one subjsct so untill they can get an availible tutur they cannot move on

I love cyber school!

i dont like that if you have a simple question you have to wait sometimes a whole day to get the answer.

We Asked ... Part 4

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

It was an easier way to take math.

I enjoyed taking Christian Ethics 10 and 20 online do so . I would definately take Christian Ethics 30 next year, but I am graduating this year. Mrs.Shewchuk was very good in communicating with me through email with questions I had or comments!

Some of the questions have a negative answer no matter how I answer them. If you could possibly refrase some of them it woul dmake life easier. Thankyou.

wassup

I love this course!!

The amount of journals expected of us is just ridiculous, this course can be easily done only if the student has a spare at school, otherwise we're just far too busy to be able to jot down every little bit of activity we do in our week and to be expected to create four journals every week for twenty-sum odd weeks is ridiculous. Also, the assignments, of the three (a good number for this course), there is only one that makes relevant sense to the course, which is the description of a golf swing. To expect a student to read a 20+ page document on curling and summarize it into 10 points... That's needlessly heavy. The archery assignment is far too vague in description. Many of the quizzes of this course have too strict answers. For instance, one answer was 'goes up', and mine was 'increases' and thus I was wrong. Add more friggin' symonyms to the answers. That situation happened to me more than once, and I lost a few marks where I should not have. Final comment: One should not need a credit in Phys. Ed in order to pass high school. And if they must, then the school should also allow the credits of grade 9 to pass on - moreso when the student comes from a different province and they have the required credits to graduate from THEIR high school, but not this new one because for some reason, they feel that four of his credits shouldn't count! If I don't graduate because of this one course, I'll be rather perturbed, if you could not already tell.

I found that the course that I took was very difficult to take through Cyberschool and would much rather have a face to face teacher that I could bounce things off of, to get more of an idea of what I was supposed to be doing.

I find math a bit challenging.

So far I have enjoyed taking Sped 30. Mr. Davidsen has been an excellent teacher and I am finding the class material very interesting.

Excellent course. Is very easy to understand, and the assignments are very fair.

Great Course!

I think that the instructer should try to answer our e-mails faster because sometimes she responds to slow.

It is a good course it just takes some getting used to

This course needs to updated and improved. A lot of stuff that is taught in this course is very outdated. There are pages upon pages of examples from comptuers that have Windows 95 or 98, when most everybody has probably now updated thier comptuers to XP or Vista which looks and acts a lot different than the older versions did. I also am very disapponted to find out that the online version of this course does not teach about Microsoft Excel, which the in school face to face course offeres in my school. Learning how to use Excel was the main reason I chose to take this course. All this online course teaches is Paint and Microsoft Word, which are incredibly basic and I learnt in grade 4 or 5 in my elementary school computer course. Plus, if you're in high school right now and don't know how to use Microsoft Word you're screwed so why teach it now?

We asked ... Part 3

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

This is a new experience for me. It will be my first time taking an online course and I am doing it to upgrade my Math A30 mark, for not only my parents but for myself. I enjoy it so far and hope that my grade will improve.

THE CAKE IS A LIE!

i tis an alright class

without this course i would not be able to be a year ahead in my math classes

Thanks

I don't learn anything while taking this course

nothing to say

nananaBatman!

Very well-developed program!

cyber school is really good:) it would be a little better if we had a little more time but other than that its awesome

I love math!!

i enjoy math!!!!!

Cybcer School is fun and I enjoy it. :)

very helpful

I think there should be due dates on the assignments instead of just doing them whenever before your last date.

I think cyber school will help me understand more things than I know right now. CYBER SCHOOL IS COOL!!

The course is to complicated! It needs to be easier!

I disliked cyber school and wished there were more instruction and directions, if found that my questions rarely got answers.

i really like cyber school because it is something diffrent and you are able to not be bored in class and be able you work at your own pace insead of the teachers

you should try and make the assignments and other stuff on the courses abit more fun and not so much book smart but add some more fun smart if u know what i mean

I like pretzels...

the cake is a lie... i like waffles o sorry i split waffles all over the keyboard well at least its the schools computer lol

it was pertty good as i would say

poopy

i enjoyed this course

I find course work to be a lot to do online in 5 months. I think the course should be shortened slightly or not include the reading assignments b/c I am working hard and scrambling to keep up and it was not like that when I took my last course.

some parts weren't explained very well...for some i had to get my mom to help me with. it didn't show how to do the questions with x and y. some things were made too complex, because there are easier ways to do steps to some things.

Cyber school is a great way to learn new things. You learn at your own pace, which is different from sitting in class and not wanting to be there. I guess when you have the free time you log onto the computer and do your work.

Six Thinking Hats

This would be a neat technique to try when making some of the major decision coming up in the new year.

I love some of the quotes in this article, it is an interesting read.

We Asked ... Part 2

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

Mrs. Sawchuk was really wonderful and her interaction definitely made the class better. The assignments were good and I'm glad they made up most of the mark because they were what seems to be the most important thing. The work we do throughout the course should matter more than the final exam for sure. :)

I think the time you have should not be so limited and easily changeable. Students who are out of school, such as myself are usually taking the course for very important and essential reasons and sometimes work and stuff runs in the way which you cannot handle. Getting time off work is not easy and its hard to make everyone happy. Extra time and concern would have been awesome. But yea...other than that i just dont think cyber school is really for me.

I would like to be able to see which question I got wrong on the tests.

So far I have liked the courses that I have taken, but in my Christian Ethics 20 class, I noticed that some of the information was outdated (ie: Who the Pope is).

cyber school is great,,

great experience! I feel kinda sad that I'm leaving the course.

cyber school is a great place to learn

Courses need more explanation for their work.

I don't really have a comment, except to say I wish I was more dilligent at the beginning of the year with this course.

Cyber School is pretty good.

this is a good system but some of the questions in the surveys are not the best

We asked ... Part 1

We asked 268 at the midterm of their course to comment on the cyber school...here is what they said...

Cyber school is great!

They should have the course a bit easier for someone to do on there own

I joined this site in hope of passing my Math class... that didn't work out too well.

Some classes where really easy to get though (math's) but others such as chemistry where not as good.

I don't like that we don't get TeenAid in the online course. I love TeenAid and the people that do it! :)

I wish my teacher would actually mark more and comment on my assignments. My course just ended and she hasnt marked anything for the last three months.

I'd just like to say that I am very thankful for the Cyber School although I do have the class time to take these classes in school, I enjoy them much more on line.

Good times and bad times.

I really enjoy being able to work ahead some days if I have extra time or take the night off if I have homework to do or tests to study for in one-six of my other classes. Cyber school has given me room to take classes that interest me, not just those that are required, in a classroom at Holy Cross.

Had any one failed in the cyber school before??

Umm i didn't really like the lack of communication between me and my instructor Cause some of the units i had trouble with

~*~i like cyber math~*~

I really like Info Processing!

I am suppose to be taking another cyber school course as far as I know. This is a fairly easy course to understand.

Answers given to questions asked via email should be detailed and show that the question was read. Also the instructor should not wait a few days to return email.

It was an interesting course.

I think there needs to be more clarity on some of the assignments and on the final there can't just be a bible verse with absolutely no explaination of what to do with it.

The course is quite easy, finding the time to do it is the hard part.

What is the url of your favourite website?

Facebook 159 students
Google64
Youtube53

The rest we a bunch of singles...these are the top three. If anyone wants to see the whole list just post a comment and I can send it to you.

I am not sure what this means...but it is kind of interesting.
