Hi Darren from a Twitter follower!
LOVE your site - just visited for the first time today.
I wanted to let you know that I'll be sharing a link to it and the learning curve video with a group of faculty here engaged in a workshop series on Teaching Online. Also plan to save link to you on our conference support wiki. Many thanks for sharing your work on Twitter! Otherwise, I would not have found you!! WizMouse | Peripherals Download | PC World

WizMouse is a tiny freeware utility that has a single, simple, function--if you hover your mouse over an inactive window, and use the mouse scroll wheel, it will scroll that window while keeping it inactive. This can be a boon for anyone copying text manually from an inactive window to an active one, or who needs to see data in one window (perhaps one partially obscured) while reading or working in another. It even scrolls applications that don't offer mousewheel support by converting the wheel to clicks on the scroll bars. In other words, if you spin the wheel down, WizMouse will virtually click the "down arrow" for you.

WizMouse has a very simple interface. Most of the time, it sits in your system tray as an icon; if you click on it, you get a small dialog with a handful of basic options. I found the default settings to be perfect.

If this sounds at all useful to you, WizMouse is free.

Comments made in the year 1955!

That was 54 years ago!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $10.00.

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $1, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. 20 cents a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

'There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $15.00 a day in the hospital, it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

Stopping bullying by teachers and other school staff

After screening responses, his research (done in the mid- 1990s) found that 11-12% of students reported bullying by peers, while 1.5-2% reported bullying by teachers, with the numbers reporting teacher bullying increasing as students got older. Interestingly, he did not find a correlation between any one young person being bullied by a teacher and that same young person being bullied by a peer- so his research suggests that teacher bullying does not set up students to then be bullied by their peers.

31 Days To A Better Blog - Day 15 « Virtual High School Meanderings

And when I look at this list, I think that Darren Cannell and I do 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10 already. I also think that we do 7 some of the time. One that we don't do at this stage, but I would be interested in doing at some point in the future is "8. You can guest post for each other." We also don't do 1, but I'm not sure that either of us need that at this stage - but you never know what will happen in the future.

So Darren Cannell, if you're reading this and I suspect you are, I would love to have your write a guest blog entry (or several guest blog entries as the spirit moves you).

If you have a topic you would like me to write about...I am there...I read your blog daily and it is great to see someone who is so involved in the American Education System still keeping his Canadian roots...love your blog.

We will never give feedback on posts prior to pressing publishing, I think that is more for the newbie bloggers who are still a little concerned about what they post.

I have vented via Skype and do appreciate your expertise in the K-12 area.

I think if and when I finish this PHD I will be looking to collaborate a lot more..but what we have done up until now has been way cool.

We have very similar taste when it comes to identifying what we think our viewers wish to see.

I have posted many of his idea and postings but more than that, reading the blog gives me idea and helps me decide where to go on any given day...

Rules in an Online Course

With the onset of the online education environment and online courses a new buzzword has evolved called, netiquette. Simply defined, it means etiquette on the Internet (or net). In an online course you will have your communication skills tested! You will be speaking through writing both to fellow students and instructors, so it is imperative to communicate well and professionally.

Actual Analogies and Metaphors- High School Style

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. Here are last year's winners.

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.
6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.
9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.
10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.
11. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.
12. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
13. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.
14. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.
15. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
16. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.
17. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.
18. Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.
19. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
20. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.
21. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.
22. The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.
23. It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.
24. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

SCCS History Request for second secretary 2003

August 26, 2003

Re: Second Secretary for Cyber School.

At present our secretary is only starting to make a dent in the work that has been accumulating over the summer. During the last school year we have entered 1000 + students into the Mat data bank. This takes approximately 10 minutes per student to verify the information.

To put this in perspective:

A normal high school registers between 200-300 new grade nine students. The rest of the students are just returning. The majority of our students are new and even if they only require one course we still need to collect all the information. In other words we are registering 3 to 4 times then most high schools. It starts to explain why Tanya was experiencing carpal tunnel sydrome.

I have noticed that the majority of my day is doing data entry, tracking students, and answering e-mails and the phone. It is my feelings that you are currently paying a large amount of money for me to do secretarial work. I believe communication issues will continue to increase, presently I answer approximately 20-30 e-mails a day...and when answering the phone all day approximately 3-4 messages accumulate on my message manager. If I am not in the office...18-20 messages. This pressure does not allow me to do the things I have been hired to do, such as assisting developers, talking to our division schools, developing policies and the vision. The type of secretary work needed is very specific to the job, such as data entry, WebCT related, answering the phone with answers to the many questions. Support by a second secretary will help to fill the gaps.

The fix, a second full time secretary.
• this will allow me to do administration
• this will allow the developers some support in typing
• this will allow the teachers to teach and not spend their day chasing delinquent students
• this will give a voice to the school
• this will allow us to support the home schools with accurate information when they request it.
• this will allow us never to experience the problems arising from having a secretary request leave.

As the numbers grow, the task of tracking students is becoming unmanageable without the support. Please consider this request, putting it off will only compound the problems. I hate to continue to ask for more but this is a very pressing need. Tanya's request for leave has just pointed out the need for a second secretary. The skills required to do Tanya's position cannot be filled by a temporary secretary. Someone with those skills will be seeking a full time position. If it was possible to hire a second permanent secretary it would be possible to find the quality of person needed. For the short term until Tanya returns we can make due with one secretary but upon her return keeping her replacement would lift some of this pressure. It would mean we are offering a full time permanent position to her replacement making it possible to gain a skill individual.

Please quickly consider this request... I have 400+ requests for courses that I will need to register by September the second and my typing fingers are starting to hurt.

Thank you in Advance
D. Cannell.

Blogs in Education

What is a Blog?

A blog is a personal website that contains content organized like a journal or a diary. Each entry is dated, and the entries are displayed on the web page in reverse chronological order, so that the most recent entry is posted at the top. Readers catch up with blogs by starting at the top and reading down until they encounter material they're already read.

Though blogs are typically thought of as personal journals, there is no limit to what may be covered in a blog. It is common for people to write blogs to describe their work, their hobbies, their pets, social and political issues, or news and current events. And while blogs are typically the work of one individual, blogs combining contributions of several people, 'group blogs', are also popular.

To the sky

It all started in a galaxy far far away, on the third planet from the sun. It was a beautiful blue planet, inviting like the arms of a parent after being away for too long. The beauty, was, however, deceiving. On that planet live a race of beings surrounded by 37 rings of galactic particles like the rings of an atom. It's been said that each ring is portal to a dark side of the galaxy. This beautiful strange race of beings called the 1st portal the Avani Galaxy ring and carried a small, woven brown sack filled with soil out of respect for its powers. They are the descendants of the Belnar clan and are a threatened race. Chancellor Drod is concerned of the forthcoming prophecy. The rings energy is insidiously strong, yet eerily magical. Whether the prophecy intimated apocalypse or utopia was a matter of controversy among the priests. Drod assumed the worst. Legend says that one of the rings can save them, but which one? Caution: the wrong one is doom. Clues are hidden in the others. There have been many throughout the generations who have made claims to hold the key to the rings, but none dared tempt fate knowing that the true holders of the keys often did so unknowingly. Those claiming powers searched for the Palivati, the unaware keepers of the key awaiting destiny. So when Lakmi, the beekeeper's daughter felt the bees' energy failing, she knew someone was searching, and they were approaching. Lakmi was not afraid, the key was safely hidden away in one of the hives. Lakmi was the chosen Pavilati guardian of the powers to unlock the rings secrets. She took this extrordinary task in stride. Being Pavilati was all she has ever known. It was her One True Purpose.

Maggda wake up tired. Another dream. Always the same. Rings, bees & strange key. She learned to ignore them long ago but this time he felt drawn toward the garden. Her neighbour had an orchard and a hive to pollinate it. A good harvest this year. Her thoughts wandered freely this morning and danced from idea to idea humming in the sun. She decided the only way to figure out what she needed to do next was to go the place where it had all started. Under the hive in her garden. She proceeded to place leaves on her eyes as she lay down in her garden underneath, what was sure to be, the answer. As she lay there she started to sleep only to be awakened by the harsh sound of an engine. An unidentifiable ancient automobile came rambling up the drive; a model her mother would've instantly recognized. She missed her. It's been already 10 years since she disappeared. That's when the strange dreams started. Could her mother be somehow involved in. The automobile came to an abrupt stop and a tall, dark and handsome man exited, his dark pentrating eyes roaming in her direction.

Cyber school questions December 2 2002

The future.
Is the system we are using now not working?
Home School needs to be more involved?
Control?
Ownership?
Home School Registration:

Resources needed.

Preparation Course for each high school. (Is a student suitable for online learning?)

People in the know needed in each school.

Forward registration information on each student

Reporting system designed for each school. (Mid term marks)

Success rate will increase with active contact in each school.

Cyber school teaches doesn't administer.

Limits entry to two points (loss of flexibility)

Limits exits to two points

Class loads will be easier to predict. Staffing will be more difficult.

Referral students are harder to refuse.

Marks are used for school averages, awards and university entrances.

Deadlines within each school will apply. (Should be common.)

Problems will be forwarded to Home School administration.

Discontinues will come from the Home School

Prerequisite checks will happen at the home school.

Information on the Web Site need to be shared with the students.

Check students have a working email address for next step...course address and passwords

School intuitive or system intuitive.

Needs the support of all schools.

Cyber School offer courses for every school.

Result is not a part of Holy Cross...part of each school.

Cyber School System

Needs resources

More flexible entry

Each year dealing with over 1000 students...800 who are new.

No history on the students.

One preparation course.

Incomplete registration forms

No way to check prerequisites

E-mail address check

Up to date information limited voices

Single semester or both semester classes

Easier to implement changes

Need for common rules between high schools.

School intuitive or system intuitive. (Christian Ethics)

Midterm reports and final reports mailed home.

Final grade marks submitted from one location (Sask Learning)

Control...

Will allow for future targets...design one system for all.

Duplication of services...

Access to student data needed

Moves some ownership to the home.

Both system can work....need more input from home schools. Meetings with Principals then with contacts are a must.

Cyber School part of Holy Cross?

What do we gain by being part of Holy Cross?
What do we gain by not being part of Holy Cross?
Has perception of being part of Holy Cross stopped other schools from taking ownership.
A concern for the developers...Home school...clarification.
A concern for myself...administrator for Holy Cross...cyber school...clarification.
Mailing address.
Blue Box.
Parking.
Space...
Budget...separate.
Entrance separate.
Hours...
Cyber Staff meeting very difficult.
Commitment at home school cuts into development and teaching time at the expense of family life.
Voice for cyber school...difficult for Holy Cross Principal to wear both hats.

Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool - Exemplary Courses

Congrats Reg Nakoneshny on an excellent course.

"The course I designed for Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool is a product of completing my Masters Degree in Educational Communications from University of Saskatchewan. It is founded in research, the result of much hard work in overcoming many design and delivery challenges. I was very excited to submit this course to the BBEC program. I truly enjoy designing new and exciting teaching methods for today's students in online instruction. Recognition by Blackboard at this level is a compliment to my efforts but also puts a spotlight on the experiences and mentors I have had along the way both in the Masters program at the University of Saskatchewan and at Cyberschool.

"The greatest satisfaction to me is the recognition this designation will bring to the Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool as a world class online institution. As an olympic athlete reaps the rewards of his training and hard work in bringing home the gold metal for his country, I feel equally as proud to bring home this award to the Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool. It is very rewarding to "officially" join the ranks of the many talented designers I have had the privilege of working with in receiving this award."

Four tips for when teaching (and life) gets crazy

Four tips for when teaching (and life) gets crazy

Embracing e-learning

Year end report June 26 2001

The following report is a ramble of thoughts and ideas . . . my goal is not to offend, it is to express my views. You English types, please excuse the grammar, spelting mistakes and run on sentences.

This year has been a whirlwind of fun and growth. We are at the stage where we are moving forward very quickly and growing at a speed that is hard to contain. Daily we are getting questions and word of mouth is advertising the project around the system. We have 106 students registered for the first semester of next year already and will see that number climb up to more than 150 by the beginning of the semester. I am very excited about the development of the courses and the level of courses we are getting. I am a little concerned about a couple of things. As this list grows, it should be known that these are not major problems and is part of the growing process. Also it is nice to know we are at the same stages or a little ahead of most other partners who are venturing down this path. Ok, to the concerns, many of the misunderstanding and frustrations this year have come from a lack of communication. The filtering down of information from SaskEd to the Superintendents to the principal to the assistant principal and then finally to the developers has left a lot to be desired. I am not pointing fingers at any of these parties it is just something that has been a source of frustrations for all involved. On a personal level, I am very uncomfortable entering into a meeting with SaskEd or any partners without all the facts. This being a new venture makes it very hard to have all the facts but we are fast approaching the state where if we are going to be looked upon as the experts we need to start to make some of those decisions. The wheels turn slow and my patience is not what it once was so it makes it very difficult to be on the phone with parents who have children interested in being part of the project and I am stammering because I don't know the answers, some of this is bound to happen but some of it is just a lack of planning. It might be an area that I am lacking in and I should be more forceful in obtaining the answers from SaskEd, Principals or the Superintendents. Again Just a Growing Pain
SaskEd has been scrabbling to find answers the same as we are and they are recognizing some of the things that we have suggested but they are also changing the rules or we did not know the rules and this has created a source of frustration for the developers. It might be because we have three of us who are communicating with them or SaskEd and we are not communicating enough. The statement was made at the SaskEd meeting "You at the Saskatoon Catholic have taken the money and used it for something that we did not want, now it is time for the contract that you signed to be honoured." This has caused a little stress, but I do believe it has to do with the way the communication has been set up. Again Just a Growing Pain
My lack of ability to find time to become more a part of the Holy Cross staff has been a source of concern, I very much enjoyed the coaching so I got a chance to meet some students but the workload has made it near impossible for me to give anything to the administration team at Cross. I am thankful to Dennis for allowing me this, I do realize I am 25% assigned to Holy Cross. As we revisit this, realistically with the cyber school job the way it structured I cannot give that 25% to Holy Cross, if this is an expectation then my job at cyber school has to change or the 25% has to, something has to change.

The secretarial time assigned to the cyber school has been a great thing. She has been a great help and has taken part of the load off my shoulders. However, she has not been able to assist the developers with their workload, which was the original plan. Having a secretary that is assigned to Holy Cross and Cyber School did not work because the busy time at Holy Cross is the busy time for us then we did not have the secretary. I like the solution where we have a full or half time secretary that will be assigned only to the cyber school, so thank you in advance for this. Not having the secretary at the beginning of the school year will cause some problems, but I am aware of the reasons why this was not possible and I am very excited about the fact we are getting a secretary.
This year I went through the steps of becoming certified for WebCT and have found that to be a very interesting process, expensive, but interesting. A certified trainer for WebCT is paid 650-1000 dollars a day plus expenses so when we are offering my services let us make sure we get part of the money back that we paid for certification. The province is starting to lean toward WebCT and in no time we will have a large number of people around who are using it.
Maintaining the machines and network has been a lot of fun each of the developers has taken responsibility for their own machine and the group of techies at the board office has done a wonderful job keeping the server up and running. We had a total of four days where our cyber school service was not up and running for the first year this is a remarkable achievement.
Our developer's surveys and Warren Noonan's survey have found the same thing. Our first year has been a very successful venture. The number of students taking classes and the needs that we are meeting within our own system in my opinion makes this a successful project. A lack of benchmarks and goals has made it difficult in deciding if we have been successful or not. This is one of the many problems encountered as we head off into uncharted territory. I had my own set of goals for the course I have developed and for the cyber school and they have been achieved.
The developers as a group have been outstanding, to be placed in such tight room and to have not killed each other is a testament to the type of people involved. They have given over and above what has been asked of them and have done very little complaining. My one concern is my lack of ability to give each one of them the attention they sometimes need. They are very good at building on each others strength and this I think has made the synergy in the room something to see. We are all looking very forward to our new pod and the ability to see daylight.
I have voiced my opinion about the development time the developers need to complete courses. I believe the 25% release that we give our developers is not enough time but the pay off for the developers, I think off sets this deficiency. The other supports that have been put in place have helped, the High Speed at home, nice chairs, learning skills and good machines. Machines at home are still a concern for some of the developers and my understanding is that it is being looked into. I am not comfortable with the amount of time that was given to Christian Ethics. We have set a formula for release time and to change that now is not a good plan with some of the developers who have already given their summer and evenings trying to complete their courses. If this is a new formula we are going to start to apply then we need to know this. Realistically a person cannot develop more then two courses in a year, giving more release time will not change this. The developers old and new are asking questions and I still do not know the reasoning.
We are looking forward to the introduction of women into the pod, I have talked to some of the developers and they said they will clean up their act. We might have to divide the new pod into two areas one for the fairer sex and one for the others. I am not sure which group some of the original developers would fall into.
I am excited about starting to look at part of the international market this project might be able to tap into, but it needs to be an organized effort and we need to set a plan in place. I think this could be an area that will assist us in our overall plan for the cyber school.

Ownership is an issue that needs to be resolved, I am very aware that it is black and white in some people's eyes but it is not for everyone and to avoid future issues we need to make a concerted effort to clarify this issue.
I have heard that we are getting to the stage where we are tapping out our system for teachers that we can afford to release for the main stream to work in this area. I think the way some people are viewing this project is that it is outside of our mandate and we need to treat it differently. If we open a new school in our system we would staff that school to fit its needs, I am wondering why this is viewed differently. If we are teaching 200+ sections in our system to our students why is this not viewed like any other program. I do not know of another area in our school system that is treated like this. I have on many occasions been told well we have to make sure this happens or that happens or this project will not continue or if we do not get to the stage where SaskEd is . . . Again, these are outside factors that we cannot control we can influence and should do everything in our power to influence but we need to plan for success. To build a project while the whole time covering our butts so that if it fails, we will be prepared for it is not the way I function, beyond a shadow of a doubt if we plan for success we will be successful. I am not sure what we have to do to get to the stage where we will be able to view this project as something other then a pilot. It is meeting the needs of students, the caliber of education has not dropped, it is not costing us any more to offer classes this way then it does to offer them in a class, so what is needed to get this to the stage where we will quit wondering if it is going to be a success. I have heard from all levels and I am as guilty as the next person that I wonder if the students are going to be able to learn this way, I wonder if . . . We will continue to hear this from the people who are not sure of what this project is all about, but if you are involved with this project you need to educate yourself to the stage where you believe in this project or you need to step out of it and let some get involved who believes in it. This is not pointed at anyone in particular but if you are reading this and you can see some of these characteristics in yourself, then talk them out and get passed them or this project is going to remain in the pilot stage forever. We will continue to be successful. If you don't believe, we are successful or going to continue to be successful then you need to re-evaluate your role in this project.
In conclusion, I have done presentations all over this province and all over Western Canada and the standard response from people as we explain what we have achieved is WOW. We need to build on this feeling.

Time to Celebrate

We need to stop and celebrate the awards that have happened this year at the cyber school. Ryan Hauber has won the Microsoft Innovative teachers award for the student lounge and will be representing Canada at Kuala Lumpur in June. This is the second year in a row for us winning the National Microsoft Innovative teacher award, Kelli Boklaschuk won it last year for her weather unit in elementary school.

To top off these two awards Reg Nakoneshny has just found out he won the BlackBoard Exemplary course award and hopefully will be attend and presenting his course in Washington DC. in July. I attempted to win this award way back in 2000 and was not even close...congrats to Reg on his course and his win I am so proud.
Cyber school is starting to stack up the awards and getting known more and more as a collection of teachers who will be push education into the next era...Holy crow you people make me proud to be able to say I get to work with you.

Yahooo for the cyber school.

How to make a teacher happy...

One of our students wrote a message to the cyber school teacher at Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School..tell me this didn't make Mr. Antonopoulos's day.

I took Physics 20 and 30 through cyber school from you and graduated from Holy Cross. I would like to thank you for providing a comprehensive guidance in the Physics 20 and 30 courses. I did very good in Physics 111 in the University. It surprised me when I found out I got the highest final mark in my section of that class. I consider myself a good student, but I have to say I am no physicist! Since 2/3 of the Physics 111 is based on review of Physics 20 and 30, it is important for me to let you know how much I gained from your courses. I think I benefited from your teaching. Thanks again.

Wow nice words...do you know a teacher from your past that you should get such a note from you????
