With More Money, New York's Schools Add More Jobs and Higher Paychecks - Series - NYTimes.com

They have overseen a large expansion in annual school spending, to $22 billion from $13 billion, with the additional money pumped in from Mr. Bloomberg's budget and from the state. And that has allowed them to reshape the system to reflect the central elements of the mayor's philosophy: smaller schools, relentless assessments of progress, and higher salaries for administrators to attract top talent.

10 Steps to Moving it forward-Cyber School improvement

Ten step to move an established cyber school forward
1.) Never ever forget what makes any school successful is it's teachers. The success or failure of a school can always be measured back to that single element.
2.) Administrations job is to supply the teachers with what they need to be successful and remove all barriers that stop this from happening.
3.) All decisions should be made with the students in mind, they are the clients.
4.) Practice what you preach, if no face to face contact is made with the students, teachers need to practice this as well. (i.e. no face to face meetings)
5.) Communication, communication, communication...it will solve most issues.
6.) Do not enforce know rules by communicating to the whole, communicate issues to the specific staff or students.
7.) Make sure teaching staff know that the internet and technology changes continuously, their courses need to reflect these changes.
8.) Teaching staff must exist where their student do, they need to have a professional online identity.
9.) Teaching staff's personal learning group should use social networking tools to access the best that exist in the world.
10.) Do not assume it is someone's problem to fix, if you work at the school it is your problem.

Google heads to grade school: New resources for K-12 teachers and students

We use the Internet all the time: at home, at work (especially at Google!), on the move, and, increasingly, at school. We believe that the Internet and cloud-based tools are a key part of a 21st century classroom, helping students learn and teachers teach in collaborative and innovative ways.

Change

Well, today is my last full day in the office before I start the summer as I sit here and reflect upon the last year, one word keeps coming to mind "CHANGE". A lot has changed for the cyber school in the last year, our demographic changed from 80% GSCS students to a 50/50 split of GSCS students and out of division students. This change caught us by surprise and caused some interesting challenges, but I hope we are better planned for the future, if that is even possible. Our staff has grown to 33 teachers give or take one or two and at this size it was necessary for another change. We had to close down the cyber school pod. The pod was a location where teachers of the cyber school had a desk in which to work, but with the number of staff growing to 33 it is not possible to house all staff members in a single place. So with broad strokes we completely shut down the work center for teachers. They now must work from their home school or their home. In the pass we supplied, chairs, desks, desktop, dual monitor and high speed at home for our teachers, now we supply a laptop, period. This may seem like a lack of support but it is just a new way of doing things and we will find a comfortable way to make this work for all. Like anything new and the cyber school never stops being new because we are always pushing the educational envelope, change will happen, when we stop changing we will stop being effective. So we will continue to welcome change and now I think I will change into my shorts and let the summer begin.
Hope you all have a God filled summer.

See ya at the end of August.

The Evidence on Online Education

The study found that students who took all or part of their instruction online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through face-to-face instruction. Further, those who took "blended" courses -- those that combine elements of online learning and face-to-face instruction -- appeared to do best of all. That finding could be significant as many colleges report that blended instruction is among the fastest-growing types of enrollment.

Need Something? Talk To My Right Ear

We humans prefer to be addressed in our right ear and are more likely to perform a task when we receive the request in our right ear rather than our left. In a series of three studies, looking at ear preference in communication between humans, Dr. Luca Tommasi and Daniele Marzoli from the University "Gabriele d'Annunzio" in Chieti, Italy, show that a natural side bias, depending on hemispheric asymmetry in the brain, manifests itself in everyday human behavior.

U.S. Push for Free Online Courses

Community colleges and high schools would receive federal funds to create free, online courses in a program that is in the final stages of being drafted by the Obama administration.

The program is part of a series of efforts to help community colleges reach more students and to link basic skills education to job training. The proposals are outlined in administration discussion drafts obtained by Inside Higher Ed. A formal announcement could come in the next few weeks. In addition to the free online courses, the plan would provide $9 billion over 10 years to help community colleges develop and improve programs related to preparing students for good jobs, and a $10 billion loan fund (at low or no interest) for community college facilities.

RT @dcannell: I think a person who has been in the k-12 trenches has more to say about k-12 education than an ivory tower researcher person.

@dcannell It's too bad government education departments don't agree with you...

@dcannell yes and no. Both views can be powerful. Often those in trenches too close to see big pic. Those in tower to high to see detail

@dcannell I agree. Every prof and education admin should teach at least part time. Even the board admin - can you imagine it? ...

@dcannell ... I also think that teachers should be students. How about as student in a colleague's class? Great Pro D for teachers.

@dcannell You are absolutely correct!

RT @dcannell I think a person who has been in the k-12 trenches has more to say about k-12 education than an ivory tower researcher person.

@dcannell Probably, but won't each have different things to say, allowing both a broader and a deeper understanding of K-12 education?

@dcannell There is one ivory tower prof who'd argue with you. I'd love to see you go head to head. I got no where with him years ago.

Let's Get Real-- Online Networks Will Change Education

Just looking about myself here in Southeastern, Michigan, the phrase "industrial mode of thinking" is enough to send shivers down my spine. "Way of thinking" is the key. I've found that many of my colleagues regard my zest for bringing web 2.0 to the classroom as a novelty. One called it a "hobby." Others certainly see it as something one does beyond regular teaching. "When do you have time to learn it?" or "How do you fit this into everything else you teach?" And those are the ones who will even talk about technology without sneering.

How To Become More Optimistic

Optimism simply means focusing on what can go right. Optimists are happier because they expect and anticipate good things to happen to them in their work life and beyond. They also see the best in every situation.
The case for optimism is a very strong one indeed. Optimists are happier, more successful, healthier, experience less stress, have better relationships and live longer. Crucially, there is plenty of evidence to support the fact that pessimists can learn to be more optimistic.
Optimism is all about how you explain the world around you. Psychologists call this your explanatory style. Your explanatory style refers to the way in which you explain the events that happen in your life, and the meaning you give to that explanation.

Tips For Writing Great Reports

One of the key elements of a good report is knowledge. Teachers deliver programmes of study through a sequence of lessons. As the lessons are being delivered and the pupils are learning, evidence of this learning is being compiled. The evidence may be transitory - through oral questions and answers, discussions and practical work such as that found in subjects like drama or physical education.

UP

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps
has more meanings than any other two-letter word,
and that word is 'UP.'
It is listed in the dictionary as being used as
an [adv],[prep],[adj.], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky
or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning,
why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ?
Why do we speak UP,
and why are the officers UP for election
and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room,
polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers
and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house
and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has a real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite,
and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.
And this up is confusing:

A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP ,
look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary,
it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about
thirty definitions

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the
many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time,
but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .
When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets UP the earth.
When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now ........
my time is UP , so time to shut UP!

Oh...one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning
& the last thing you do at night? U P

The Future of Education: Youtwitface to teach.

We are currently living in a technogically-advanced world and the Internet has been highly-regarded as a necessity in life and not a want anymore. As a 15-Year-Old student, I spend several hours on the net daily to find information on Wikipedia for my school projects, watch Barack Obama's speeches on YouTube, and get in touch with my friends on social networking websites Facebook and Twitter. For the past generations, kids like me do not even get a chance to surf the Internet at all when they are young.

The Future of Education: Teachers to use Facebook, Twitter & YouTube to Teach

Out of the Box.

Have you ever been told....you think outside the box, or that you should try to think outside the box. Box is a term which is thrown around alot in education. For people involved in education is it necessary to think outside the for education to be success? Is the box a bad thing? What exactly is the box? Are we talking about the country's political box, the curriculum box, the country box, the school division box, the classroom box, the school box, the student age box, the gender box? I am really confused, too many boxes and all with personal self interest and a real loss ofunderstanding that education is about the students. Is this the reason why home schooling is on the rise? So the next time someone says that you think outside the box ask them "Which box?" and then don't wait around for an answer they might tell you and wreck the compliment. At least I think it is a compliment when someone says you think outside the box, at least I think it is...maybe I better ask someone in the box, any idea where I can find a box...never mind... I will just say thanks.

Twitter Talks: Report Card Comments

On twitter I asked people to submit their Report Card Comment real or not... it was meant to be an exercise that for teachers at this time of year might be a release for all the real report card comments they have to write. Some of the responses were just plain funny.
• On my 3rd grade report card: Please allow Bethany to talk at home. She says you make her save it up for school.
• He loves to write too bad no one can read his hand writing.
• What part of prerequisite did you not understand?
• After meeting you at parent conferences, I would like to commend your son/daughter on beating the odds.
• Please inspect your home for lead-based paint. Things we would like to say but we are professionals
• Have you considered home learning?
• Billy is a malignant tumour sucking the life force from the class.
• Very smart but never stops talking long enough to show it.
• She is much smarter than her brother.
• He's a bit of a crybaby. Please fix this over the summer.
• Your child might want to get a job using his hands and back.
• Considering the genetic factors, not too bad.
• He must come from a shallow gene pool.
• Grade: D- Smart, but bored. Passing her on in hopes she'll do better.
• Some drink from the fountain of knowledge; your child just gargles.
• My all time fave, "Your child has a lot of untapped potential."
• Your child inspires others to realize their true potential.
• He was not in class enough to evaluate.
• Your child is a waste of skin (teacher is saving this comment until his last year of teaching)
• Reads well but understands nothing.
• A great regard for his own abilities, but unfortunately not reflected in his grades. We don't grade hubris.
• I am passing him on to high school because we don't provide parking spaces for 8th graders.
• Your child's mark is a direct reflection of my ability as a teacher.
• I am passing him because a third year with me would do him no good.

Top French court rips heart out of Sarkozy internet law

The Constitutional Council declared access to the internet to be a basic human right, directly opposing the key points of Mr Sarkozy's law, passed in April, which created the first internet police agency in the democratic world.

The strongly-worded decision means that Mr Sarkozy's scheme has backfired and inadvertently boosted those who defend the free-for-all culture of the web.

Rules for Teachers 1872

1.) Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys.

2.) Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session.

3.) Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils.

4.) Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.

5.) After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.

6.) Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.

7.) Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.

8.) Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty.

9.) The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.

College in Need, Closes a Door to Needy Students

Money was the problem. Too many of the students needed financial aid, and the college did not have enough. So the director of financial aid gave the team another task: drop more than 100 needy students before sending out acceptances, and substitute those who could pay full freight.

Friending your students

The fear about teacher-student interactions also worries me at a broader societal level. A caring teacher (a genuinely well-intended, thoughtful, concerned adult) can often turn a lost teen into a teen with a mission. Many of us are lucky to have parents who helped us at every turn, but this is by no means universal. There are countless youth out there whose parents are absent, distrustful, or otherwise sources of frustration rather than support and encouragement. Teens need to have adults on their side.

Gridlock at the World Copyright Summit

If there was one word that summed up yesterday's proceedings, it was "gridlock." This term was introduced by Michael Heller, a Columbia Law School professor who spoke in the morning. The word came from his book The Gridlock Economy, whose basic thesis is that too much ownership or property, including intellectual property, creates gridlock that results in underutilization of property and stunting of innovation.

8 ways cloud computing may change schools

In considering the 8 statements that Dion has shared from a business perspective, I thought I'd have a crack at presenting some thoughts on how I see cloud computing changing education - in particular, schools - in the near future. (note - I am aware that in some of the ideas represented here I am blurring the boundaries between cloud computing and virtualisation, but the impacts are still valid.)

Life Lessons

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written.
My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay cheque.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion,
Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."
