5 Ways To Work With Resistant Teachers
Contrary to what some believe out there, I don't 'like' everyone. There are people who make it very difficult at times to achieve the goals I have for inspiring and supporting teachers and learners in my school. However, as much as there are difficulties with them, those who are challenging to our best efforts often provide an opportunity for us to put forward better and more effective work. It may not always be apparent to us in the moment, but adversity inspires creativity and encourages alternative perspectives. With that in mind, here are some of the ideas I utilize in working with some of my peers who may not always be 'on the same track' as I am.

The Five eLearning Components
There are five eLearning Components that are essential for all successful online courses. Understanding these components will help you design and develop a course that meets computer-based training objectives. The diagram above illustrates how these components are connected. Each elearning component plays an important role in designing an online course. Among all of the components, none plays a larger role than the Audience.

Rather than creating a blanket ban, the new policy anticipates that students will want to use to their own personal computer devices -- such as iPhones, net-books, BlackBerrys, laptops and tablet computers -- and will want to access the school's Internet networks, she said.

Facebook vs Twitter experiment
I had created a video in October of 2009 called You Can't Be My Teacher. This Youtube video had 1281 hits in the first month. It continued to climb right into the New Year and had 2226 hits (More than all my other 300+ videos put together. On January 4 2010, I started an experiment, I wanted to see if Twitter or Facebook was a better way to spread an idea.
My Twitter's account, I have tried to surround myself with teacher, online educators and people in education...there are 1624 people following my postings. I mentioned the video in three different postings, the first generated a 450 hit spike, the second generated 200 hit spike and the third generated 260 hit spike and were spread out over two months period. A total of 4887 hits occurred during this two month period.

Then I decided to introduce Facebook into this experiment, I have 627 friends made up of family, friends, ex-students and peers. I posted 12 image with link to the video in my photos folder and then tag all my Facebook friends for a single day. This single day produced 1554 hits on the video and generated a pile of comments.
My conclusions to the very scientific experiment was that Facebook can be a powerful tool to spread the word if you spam tag your friends, while twitter used as it was designed can also be an powerful way of getting the word out there.
I would like to thank all my twitter PLN and my Facebook friends for being participants in my education pursuits.

21st Century Learning: You can't be my teacher.
I love the comments,
It amazes me that many teachers have skipped the message and talk about how rude it is for a student to think they have a right to evaluate them as teachers. Any teacher that does not think they are being evaluated by their students have never been in a large school where students have the ability to change their course schedule based on who is teaching what courses. The days of automatic respect from students for teachers is gone, teachers must earn the students respect. In the future students are going to be more and more mobile due to the way distance education has the ability to remove the barrier of distance and offer a wider number of options. Options which students will choose if their current educational environment does not provide them with what they need. Whether it being the use of technology, delivery technique or style student will choose the education of their choice. The video was scripted by myself and the actor used is actually very respectful of formal education and of his teachers. The video was designed to start a discussion, unfortunately many teachers rather than discussing the message or accepting the challenge talk about the way the message was delivered...interesting...I wish I knew why it was so hard for education to change????
From the number of sites that has linked this video I would say that it has served it's purpose of starting discussion.

English teachers polled in the last decade of the last century about the one tool that they could not live without in their classrooms would probably select the overhead projector. In the first decade of the 21st Century, English teachers would probably choose a document camera, but in future decades, the tool will be web-based. As a teacher, I hope none of my students EVER see this
Comments for "You Can't Be My Teacher."
I very much enjoy the message you are trying to get out there. However...
As a teacher, I hope none of my students EVER see this and here is why...
My (and many teachers I know) biggest pet peeve about students is when they try to tell me what my job is. Most of the time, students don't know what their job is. Nobody knows what a teacher's job is except teachers, and sadly not all of them know. Everyone else's opinions are simply that... opinions.
Web 2.0 is powerful. Be careful with it.
As an educator, I hope your students see it and demand a better education. It is their job to want the best you can offer them - after all, their parents are paying you.
It is usually fear and laziness that prevent teachers from taking risks. Are you so afraid of learning something new?
It will be a rare person who will not need Web 2.0 tools in their job in the very near future - including yourself! So look out, one of my students may be replacing you very soon.
I saw this - and I guess two things struck me. The first was that a lot of this had been scripted devised. You have a sociopolitical point you wish to make about educators and you are using your son to make it. That's a bit sick. The second point I wish to make is that taking him around the world is going to give him a tonne of great experiences, lessons and expose him to cultures. It's generally proven however that homeschooled kids (even cool jetsetting gypsy ones) are way behind in the way...
Way behind in what way? Socially? Emotionally? Educationally? Does the same things apply to students who are involved in a virtual school? Does the benefits of travelling out weigh the bad? My son was my actor, why does that make it sick? It was completely scripted by myself to put forth a message, one I take you do not like I guess?
I actually don't mind the point (ie: there are some teachers behind the 8 ball with technology)... I guess my points are 1) you are putting your son on the internet to endorse your personal politics. Surely, any consent he makes to be a part of it is mute, given that that you're his dad and that he is not paid. 2) That you are homeschooling your kid for a year, homeschooled kids tend to be a little behind because of what they miss out on - arguably more than having 1 teacher who isnt tech savvy.
Good points both. The homeschooling for a year is not because his teacher is not using technology, in actual fact we are going to try to connect back to his class using technology during the year. The year out of school is us travelling for the year and the hope is that during the year he will benefit more then he will lose. Which is a process we all do as parents when raising our children, try to decide what is best for them.
Are teachers really that afraid of technology and the internet?
Maybe someone can print this off on a slate with chalk and hand it to some of those other teachers who have barricaded themselves into their classrooms and lockout the world and hope that this internet thing is just a fad and the good old days will come back.
I am amazed at the number of people who do not think technology and the internet are a necessary part of education today. Do teachers really think that a powerful tool like technology should not be embraced? The teacher is still the most important element in a classroom but why would they not embrace what the internet can offer. Is the Sage on the stage threatened by the information available, or is it the evils of the net, or is it the learning curve or do they truly believe that a textbook and themselves is enough to create a education which will prepare students for the world today? I am open to comments and clarifications cause I am afraid for the educational system although the ones reading this use some of the technology.
Comments for "You Can't Be My Teacher."
What a brat. I would hope that my children have more respect for knowledge from any source, book or technology. What a farce that books are not a great sources of knowledge? Check out the new Pearson math books that combine technology and text. You cannot find content that is as well explained, consistent, and coherent as in some of those textbooks, ie., "excursions in Modern Mathematics" by Tannenbaum.
You have read the other comments, the brat is my son acting using my words. Listen to the video, he did not say you cannot use books he (me) said that you need to include technology, just like the Pearson math book. Books are already used in our school system in all courses a video called You can't be my teacher if you don't use books would not make much sense. The idea is to include technology because of the world in which he will need to live, work and exist.
I understand that for some the thought of technology in education can be threatening. What I find disappointing is when one insults a child who has simply assisted his father in bringing to light a topic that is becoming more and more relevant in todays education. I too hope my children have respect for all sources of knowledge just as I would expect them to have regard for others views and the maturity level to approach those opinions they may not agree with in a respectful manner.
Having to push ourselves as educators can be an uncomfortable experience, but it is our chosen vocation and part of it is to be lifelong learners. It is my belief we can do no greater injustice to our students then to not prepare them for the real world. This does not mean we give up our role to try to make society better and some believe it would be better without technology. Unfortunately this is not reality.

Five "Honorees" of Bunkum Awards
State education agencies and local school districts are increasingly asked to make evidence-based decisions about school reform initiatives, often assuming that all evidentiary claims are the result of high-quality research. Unfortunately, much of the evidence offered in policy debates is based on research reports that have bypassed the quality control mechanisms of academic research.
In an effort to help education policy makers separate the wheat from the chaff, expert third party reviews are provided by the Think Tank Review Project, a collaboration of the Education and Public Interest Center (EPIC) at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Education Policy Research Unit (EPRU) at Arizona State University. Each year the reports identified by experts as the worst of the worst are awarded a "Bunkum." The Think Tank Review Project today announced five "honorees" for 2009.
do we have to teach naked?
Call them the gamer generation, millennials, or digital natives, but computer-savvy (or at the very least, connected and techno-curious) kids in higher educational classrooms today use, and expect their profs to use, digital technology to communicate and teach. And for the most part, they are underwhelmed with the low levels of edtech uptake and digital literacy of their profs. The feeling goes both ways of course, professors claiming that, beyond facebook and texting, students are not digital wizards with mad skillz, far from it in fact, despite many claims to the contrary.

Predictors of Success for Adult Online Learners
As an adjunct professor for an online-only graduate school course, I have found myself contemplating the retention rate of adult e-learners.
What are the predictors of adult students' success in online learning environments? Is there a difference in undergraduate versus graduate online learners and their motivations? Does age play a factor? Do the course's characteristics have an impact on performance and learner satisfaction? What are the implications of these findings for online instructors, and how could that affect their practices and approaches to retaining students in the future?
Here, I examine what the literature says about these questions.
We are More... by Shane Koyczan
Being Canadian this brings tears to my eyes, it was part of the opening ceremony at the Olympics and it was not written by Canadian Beer company which in the past has been responsible for many other proud Canadian poems.
When defining Canada
you might list some statistics
you might mention our tallest building
or biggest lakeyou might shake a tree in the fall
and call a red leaf Canada
you might rattle off some celebrities
might mention Buffy Sainte-Marie
might even mention the fact that we've got a few
Barenaked Ladies
or that we made these crazy things
like zippers
electric cars
and washing machines
when defining Canada
it seems the world's anthem has been
" been there done that"
and maybe that's where we used to be at
it's true
we've done and we've been
we've seen
all the great themes get swallowed up by the machine
and turned into theme parks
but when defining Canada
don't forget to mention that we have set sparks
we are not just fishing stories
about the one that got away
we do more than sit around and say "eh?"
and yes
we are the home of the Rocket and the Great One
who inspired little number nines
and little number ninety-nines
but we're more than just hockey and fishing lines
off of the rocky coast of the Maritimes
and some say what defines us
is something as simple as please and thank you
and as for you're welcome
well we say that too
but we are more
than genteel or civilized
we are an idea in the process
of being realized
we are young
we are cultures strung together
then woven into a tapestry
and the design
is what makes us more
than the sum total of our history
we are an experiment going right for a change
with influences that range from a to zed
and yes we say zed instead of zee
we are the colours of Chinatown and the coffee of Little Italy
we dream so big that there are those
who would call our ambition an industry
because we are more than sticky maple syrup and clean snow
we do more than grow wheat and brew beer
we are vineyards of good year after good year
we reforest what we clear
because we believe in generations beyond our own
knowing now that so many of us
have grown past what used to be
we can stand here today
filled with all the hope people have
when they say things like "someday"
someday we'll be great
someday we'll be this
or that
someday we'll be at a point
when someday was yesterday
and all of our aspirations will pay the way
for those who on that day
look towards tomorrow
and still they say someday
we will reach the goals we set
and we will get interest on our inspiration
because we are more than a nation of whale watchers and lumberjacks
more than backpacks and hiking trails
we are hammers and nails building bridges
towards those who are willing to walk across
we are the lost-and-found for all those who might find themselves at a loss
we are not the see-through gloss or glamour
of those who clamour for the failings of others
we are fathers brothers sisters and mothers
uncles and nephews aunts and nieces
we are cousins
we are found missing puzzle pieces
we are families with room at the table for newcomers
we are more than summers and winters
more than on and off seasons
we are the reasons people have for wanting to stay
because we are more than what we say or do
we live to get past what we go through
and learn who we are
we are students
students who study the studiousness of studying
so we know what as well as why
we don't have all the answers
but we try
and the effort is what makes us more
we don't all know what it is in life we're looking for
so keep exploring
go far and wide
or go inside but go deep
go deep
as if James Cameron was filming a sequel to The Abyss
and suddenly there was this location scout
trying to figure some way out
to get inside you
because you've been through hell and high water
and you went deep
keep exploring
because we are more
than a laundry list of things to do and places to see
we are more than hills to ski
or countryside ponds to skate
we are the abandoned hesitation of all those who can't wait
we are first-rate greasy-spoon diners and healthy-living cafes
a country that is all the ways you choose to live
a land that can give you variety
because we are choices
we are millions upon millions of voices shouting
" keep exploring... we are more"
we are the surprise the world has in store for you
it's true
Canada is the "what" in "what's new?"
so don't say "been there done that"
unless you've sat on the sidewalk
while chalk artists draw still lifes
on the concrete of a kid in the street
beatboxing to Neil Young for fun
don't say you've been there done that
unless you've been here doing it
let this country be your first-aid kit
for all the times you get sick of the same old same old
let us be the story told to your friends
and when that story ends
leave chapters for the next time you'll come back
next time pack for all the things
you didn't pack for the first time
but don't let your luggage define your travels
each life unravels differently
and experiences are what make up
the colours of our tapestry
we are the true north
strong and free
and what's more
is that we didn't just say it
we made it be.

The fact that you are concerned about fulfill his expectations indicates the fact that you are a teacher that cares, and no matter what tool teachers use to teach, one who cares is an awesome powerful teacher. All teachers should be lifelong learners and adapting their teaching styles as the world changes to match what is happening outside the walls of our schools...a challenging profession but one that is unmatched in value to society...Congrats in being one of the most powerful people in the world.

Thank you Malcolm Bellamy for the posting, I also have found the comments about the video interesting because of how they are polarized. My son being only six does not really believe what he said. He loves technology but also loves school and very little technology is used in his classroom. But it is my belief that in the future more and more of our students will approach school with the feeling that schools should not be islands different than the world in which they live. To train them for jobs that do not even exist yet is a challenge to our profession, and many would say we are not even preparing them for what already exists.
Anyways a long winded thank you for the post.

The New School of Google
Our parents could never have guessed what kind of world our generation would encounter; the fate of our children is even less certain. We don't know what answers they will need to seek out -- those facts might not even exist yet. We don't even know the questions they will have to ask. There is no worksheet or textbook that will prepare them for what lays ahead.

Are You An Internet Optimist or Pessimist?
The impact of technological change on culture, learning, and morality has long been the subject of intense debate, and every technological revolution brings out a fresh crop of both pessimists and pollyannas. Indeed, a familiar cycle has repeat itself throughout history whenever new modes of production (from mechanized agriculture to assembly-line production), means of transportation (water, rail, road, or air), energy production processes (steam, electric, nuclear), medical breakthroughs (vaccination, surgery, cloning), or communications techniques (telegraph, telephone, radio, television) have appeared on the scene.

What is the Future of Teaching?
According to the New York Times Bits blog, a recent study funded by the US Department of Education (PDF) found that on the whole, online learning environments actually led to higher tested performance than face-to-face learning environments. "On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction," concluded the report's authors in their key findings.
The report looked at just under one hundred studies that compared the performance of students in online learning environments (or courses with an online study component) to those who were given strictly face-to-face instruction for the same courses. What they found was that students who completed all or some of their coursework online tested on average in the 59th percentile, compared to the 50th percentile for those who received only classroom instruction, and that the results are statistically significant.

Practical Computer Jokes
Funny ways to mess people around by using their computers, you should preferably wait until the person is out of the room:
1.Take a screenshot of their desktop, save it and then set it to the background. Then right click on an empty space on the desktop and goto Arrange By > Show Desktop Icons. This should be ticked, by clicking on it, this will hide all the icons but it still looks like the icons are there because of the back drop, its great fun watching them trying to double click something. To take a screenshot: Press the "Print Screen" (or "Prt Sc") button on your keyboard, this should be somewhere near the top right-hand corner of the keyboard. Then go into MS Paint (Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint). Click the Edit menu, then select Paste. Then save the file wherever you want it.
2. Move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, then shrink it down to its smallest possible size. make sure to then lock the taskbar.
3. Ping off the keys from the keyboard with a pen or a knife or something slim, them rearrange them in a random manner.
4. Put some kind of powder (talcom, baby powder, chalk. whatever) onto the processor and/or the power supply fan. when they start up their computer clouds of smoke will start to rise
5.Put some tape over the floppy drive button, only works for those real simple people though.
6. Replace their Windows start-up sound with a recording that plays 15 minutes of silence, then plays very quiet random sounds every few minutes after that. It will drive them crazy working out where/why the sounds are coming from.
State of the Internet Explained In One Giant Infographic [PIC]
The focus is on exactly who uses the Internet, and how often. It breaks things down by gender, age, income level, and nationality. It even serves up average broadband speeds for both landline and mobile users at the bottom. Some of this stuff surprised us a bit -- For example, desktop computers are still much more common than laptops. You wouldn't guess that in day-to-day life in the developed world -- at least not when it comes to personal use.

Supporting Online Faculty - Revisiting the Seven Principles (A Few Years Later)
Since 2005, the landscape of online teaching and learning has changed as well as the landscape of the academy, and continues to transform before our eyes. These changes are not only a product of technological innovation, but also a result of new and reconceptualized values of higher education, and so we must reexamine what changes to faculty role, position and perspectives best support these new values. Drawing on the Seven Principles of Good Practice, this article visits the need for effective faculty support and development in online education. Online education has forever transformed higher education, and we are learning that quality requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to the changing demands of learners, the new promises of technology, and the new competitive landscape of higher education. If higher education is to remain competitive, we must refocus and redesign our paradigms, as well as design business processes that integrate with quality assurance models.

Adults ruined blogs for kids, study shows
A study released this week by the the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project shows that teens have pulled back on their blog use in the past couple of years, while use by adults has remained steady. The numbers break down like this: In 2006, 28 percent of teens said they blogged regularly. In 2009, by comparison, that number dropped to 18 percent.

Two Pew Internet Project surveys of teens and adults reveal a decline in blogging among teens and young adults and a modest rise among adults 30 and older. Teens ages 12-17 do not use Twitter in large numbers, though high school-aged girls show the greatest enthusiasm for the application.

Doing cyber school on the trapline.
The teacher who received this email stated this is why I love the cyber school...
Student's email.
I am enrolled in your Cyber school science 10 class. I am a Christian. I like hunting and fishing, if it has something to do with the outdoors, I will probably enjoy it! I don't play many video games, I would rather hunt or ride my horse. For my 13th birthday, my dad took me on a survival canoe trip, I have a red-bone/coonhound that I hunt squirrels with. I have been homeschooled for 9 years, so this course fit right in! We normally live for 5 months of the year on a northern saskatchewan trapline. It is 3 hours from our farm by snowmobile and our farm is 45 mins from civilization by van. Our power is entirely solar power, so if we have a stretch of clouds, my computer usege is limited, but it is rare! My plan and goal is to finish this course in one semester, so any advise to keep me on that track would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking foward to this class.

When you've got thousands of the world's most brilliant engineers spending 20% of their time on whatever takes their fancy, you need a home for the results. It would provide a playground where the geekier contingent of the general public can access ideas before those ideas are ready for public consumption. It would be associated enough with Google to get the brand benefits, and quarantined enough so that it doesn't put the core service at risk.

Why E-Learning is So Effective
E-learning is hot. And for good reason. If done right, it can produce great results by decreasing costs and improving performance. Also, unlike a one time classroom session, the elearning course is available for others. This includes the static elearning course as well as any ongoing conversations in networked communities.
Recently, I had a conversation with someone new to elearning and it struck me that she didn't fully understand the value of elearning. I think this is common as more people are joining the world of elearning. Understanding elearning's value helps you make the best decisions about when and why to use it.

Virtual School Received $2 Million Donation
The thing that I like most about this donation is that it was given to an online program that focuses upon Canada's aboriginal population. For those of my readers not familiar with Canadian history, while we did not treat our native population quite as poorly as the United States treated their Native Americans, Canadian aboriginals were treated quite bad. Many of the problems that exist in the aboriginal community today are a directly result of government mistreatment and misguided policies.
