e-Learning for Kids
In today's complex world, children's futures are determined by their ability to master the basics of reading, science, math and computers. Yet costs, class sizes and other issues often prevent children access to quality online learning that can support and reinforce these essential skills.
Our vision is to be the source for childhood learning on the Internet - available from anywhere and without charge. Established in late 2004, e-Learning for Kids is a global, nonprofit foundation dedicated to fun and free learning on the Internet for children ages 5 - 12. We offer free, best-in-class courseware in math, science, reading and keyboarding; and we're building a community for parents and educators to share innovations and insights in childhood education.

21st Century Literacies: Tools for Reading the World
In Intelligence Reframed Howard Gardner contends that "literacies, skills, and disciplines ought to be pursued as tools that allow us to enhance our understanding of important questions, topics, and themes." Today's readers become literate by learning to read the words and symbols in today's world and its antecedents. They analyze, compare, evaluate and interpret multiple representations from a variety of disciplines and subjects, including texts, photographs, artwork, and data. They learn to choose and modify their own communication based on the rhetorical situation. Point of view is created by the reader, the audience and the medium.

The Periodic Table of Videos - University of Nottingham
The Periodic Table of Videos is a modern version of the famous periodic table of elements. It is perfect for your chemistry classes. It is maintained by the University of Nottingham in England. When loading the page, there is the traditional periodic table. Each of the 118 elements is clickable. By clicking on one, you will get the usual information like the name of the element and the atomic number, but there will also be a YouTube video embedded. The video will give information about the element presented by a scientist and then some sort of experiment using that element. Sometimes, the experiment is an impressive one like the famous sodium in water. Did you know the body of a pencil sharpener is made of magnesium? This is one of the many things your students will learn from this website.

The Origin of the Nerd
In the little more than a decade since I created my original web page here about the origin of the word nerd, it has grown considerably, in part due to various controversies about the word's origins as well as to new information and speculation about its history. My views on the term's origin have not changed much, as you can see by the fact that Dr. Seuss's Nerd has joined me in the page's icon (assuming that you're not viewing the page in the "Full Width" style), but it does seem like time to reorganize the material.
The factor that made me decide that nerd might be a label worth reclaiming was its early association with Dr. Seuss. Having grown up with the Cat in the Hat, Horton and the Grinch, there are worse things to identify with than a hirsute curmudgeonly Seuss character, especially when one is a hirsute curmudgeonly engineer, as I am.

Educational Games, Worksheets & Homework Help for Kids, Parents and Teachers
Game Classroom was developed to address needs we witnessed firsthand as parents and educators. Game Classroom is the newest web property from Earlier Media, where we are dedicated to providing trustworthy online destinations for children of all ages to learn, watch videos and play games online.
We've thoroughly searched the web for engaging and educational games for kids, and we've collaborated with top educators to ensure that all of our games are age-appropriate, relevant and compliant with academic standards. Our team of educators has also created a vast library of "Homework Help" as an additional resource for students, teachers and parents.
As online games become increasingly pervasive in the home, we strive to offer a site that adults can trust and children will enjoy. We promote education, imagination and literacy...while always making sure kids have fun on Game Classroom!

TakingITGlobal - Inspire. Inform. Involve.
This is the second posting pertaining to this presentation that will be happening in Saskatoon. The reason we are posting it a second time is because of the change we have made in the timing of this presentation...it will be at 3:30 p.m.
When I was in Asia with Microsoft I had the opportunity to meet with Katherine Walraven (Education Program Manager) at TakingITGlobal. She is willing to come to Saskatoon to see if we would be interested in accessing Taking It Global. At the end of August she will be flying past Saskatoon and I have convince her to land here for a day or so. She would be willing to present Taking It Global network and how it could be used in our schools on August 31 at 3:30 p.m. This is a program that I have been following for a couple of years and I think it has a lot of merit and would be something we will be using in the cyber school student lounge next year, but since I was thinking of having her drop by I was thinking about expanding the viewing audience.
Please reply to the email below if you would be interested in attending said presentation so I can set up an appropriate venue:

Why Bother?
• Global awareness and understanding across cultures is key to the future of the planet
• Student dropout and disengagement rates are at all-time highs, and costing billions in lost economic opportunities and crime

So Far...

Dinosaurs for Kids at Kids Dig Dinos
I created this site about dinosaurs for kids because, let's face it, dinosaurs are cool! It's almost like someone invented dinosaurs for kids! There's the flyers like the pteradactyl, meat eaters like T-rex, herbivores (they just eat vegetables like plants and things) like the apotosaurus, and sea creatures like the kronosaurus! I like the predators the best, like the velociraptor and the Troodon. If you don't know what a Troodon is yet, I'll tell you all about them on this site.

100 Helpful Web Tools for Every Kind of Learner
For those unfamiliar with the term, a learning style is a way in which an individual approaches learning. Many people understand material much better when it is presented in one format, for example a lab experiment, than when it is presented in another, like an audio presentation. Determining how you best learn and using materials that cater to this style can be a great way to make school and the entire process of acquiring new information easier and much more intuitive. Here are some great tools that you can use to cater to your individual learning style, no matter what that is.

Evaluating Web Pages
Evaluating web pages skillfully requires you to do two things at once:
Train your eye and your fingers to employ a series of techniques that help you quickly find what you need to know about web pages;
Train your mind to think critically, even suspiciously, by asking a series of questions that will help you decide how much a web page is to be trusted.
This page is organized to combine the two techniques into a process that begins with looking at your search results from a search engine or other source, follows through by investigating the content of page, and extends beyond the page to what others may say about the page or its author(s).

8 Ways to Build Websites (Not Blogs) for Free
I am frequently asked by colleagues and readers, "can you help me set up a blog, a wiki, or whatever?" I am not paraphrasing that question, I'm really asked to help set up a "whatever." The reason the "whatever" gets thrown in there is because teachers and people in general have heard the terms blog, wiki, website but they're not sure of the differences between them.

WizMouse | Peripherals Download | PC World
WizMouse is a tiny freeware utility that has a single, simple, function--if you hover your mouse over an inactive window, and use the mouse scroll wheel, it will scroll that window while keeping it inactive. This can be a boon for anyone copying text manually from an inactive window to an active one, or who needs to see data in one window (perhaps one partially obscured) while reading or working in another. It even scrolls applications that don't offer mousewheel support by converting the wheel to clicks on the scroll bars. In other words, if you spin the wheel down, WizMouse will virtually click the "down arrow" for you.
WizMouse has a very simple interface. Most of the time, it sits in your system tray as an icon; if you click on it, you get a small dialog with a handful of basic options. I found the default settings to be perfect.
If this sounds at all useful to you, WizMouse is free.

Virtual Field Trips | SimpleK12
A virtual field trip takes students on a tour of a location using a series of web sites that have been linked together, creating a guided experience.
Since they do not require special software, they can be accessed from a classroom or home computer. Virtual field trips can enhance the content of a lesson by providing an activity that extends students' experiences with a topic by taking them outside of the classroom and into a different environment.

Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool - Exemplary Courses
Congrats Reg Nakoneshny on an excellent course.
"The course I designed for Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool is a product of completing my Masters Degree in Educational Communications from University of Saskatchewan. It is founded in research, the result of much hard work in overcoming many design and delivery challenges. I was very excited to submit this course to the BBEC program. I truly enjoy designing new and exciting teaching methods for today's students in online instruction. Recognition by Blackboard at this level is a compliment to my efforts but also puts a spotlight on the experiences and mentors I have had along the way both in the Masters program at the University of Saskatchewan and at Cyberschool.
"The greatest satisfaction to me is the recognition this designation will bring to the Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool as a world class online institution. As an olympic athlete reaps the rewards of his training and hard work in bringing home the gold metal for his country, I feel equally as proud to bring home this award to the Saskatoon Catholic Cyberschool. It is very rewarding to "officially" join the ranks of the many talented designers I have had the privilege of working with in receiving this award."

To the sky
It all started in a galaxy far far away, on the third planet from the sun. It was a beautiful blue planet, inviting like the arms of a parent after being away for too long. The beauty, was, however, deceiving. On that planet live a race of beings surrounded by 37 rings of galactic particles like the rings of an atom. It's been said that each ring is portal to a dark side of the galaxy. This beautiful strange race of beings called the 1st portal the Avani Galaxy ring and carried a small, woven brown sack filled with soil out of respect for its powers. They are the descendants of the Belnar clan and are a threatened race. Chancellor Drod is concerned of the forthcoming prophecy. The rings energy is insidiously strong, yet eerily magical. Whether the prophecy intimated apocalypse or utopia was a matter of controversy among the priests. Drod assumed the worst. Legend says that one of the rings can save them, but which one? Caution: the wrong one is doom. Clues are hidden in the others. There have been many throughout the generations who have made claims to hold the key to the rings, but none dared tempt fate knowing that the true holders of the keys often did so unknowingly. Those claiming powers searched for the Palivati, the unaware keepers of the key awaiting destiny. So when Lakmi, the beekeeper's daughter felt the bees' energy failing, she knew someone was searching, and they were approaching. Lakmi was not afraid, the key

365 Smart NoteBook Lessons Project
We at TADO came up with an interesting idea based on the 52 Teachers, 52 Lessons Project (http://www.teachforever.com/2009/01/52-teachers-52-lessons-project.html) From the "I want to Teach Forever Blog".
With the interest in Smart and Interactive White Boards in educational settings we thought that asking our colleagues to submit their favorite Smart Notebook Lesson Files so that we can showcase them on our blog. Ideally we would like to post a new lesson each day.
At TADO we are all about sharing and collaborating. You the educators, have the tried, tested and true lessons that you have used in your classrooms and we want to share your great ideas with our readers.
We will also be posting your lessons on our Smart Board resource site called " I Love Smart Boards" (http://blog.scs.sk.ca/ilovesmartboards) and in our Smart Board User Learning Community.
To submit your favorite Notebook lesson please email your file to : rstromberg@gscs.sk.ca
Bonus: If you submit a Notebook File you will gain access to our On-line Smart Board User Learning Community where you can connect to educators from around the world who work with Smart or Interactive White Boards.

DocMazy
DocMazy is a search tool that takes a specific concern into account, namely looking up documents on the World Wide Web. The folks behind it explain that their aim was coming up with a solution that would enable anybody to find only the files that they are looking for, be them PDFs, Word documents or PowerPoint presentations, and do so in an instant manner. The idea is to dispense with the clutter and provide the user only with relevant results, and to let him browse through these in a hassle-free fashion.

Classroom Resources to Counter Cyber Bullying
he Internet has created a whole new world of social communications for young people who are using e-mail, social networking Web sites, instant messaging, chat rooms and text messaging to stay in touch with friends and make new ones.
While most interactions are positive, increasingly kids are using these communication tools to antagonize and intimidate others. According to a 2008 University of Toronto cyber bullying survey, nearly one in five Canadian students surveyed reported having been bullied online in the past three months. An Alberta study found that one-third of students who had cyber bullied, had also been victims themselves.

What Wiki would you use...
The following was asked on the webct user listserve:
We are looking at using Wikis as part as an evaluation tool in our CE 8 system. We heard of multiple Wikis out there, but would like your opinion of what Wiki do you use with your Blackboard system, and is it a Power Link?
We have worked with MediaWiki because it's the original engine behind Wikipedia. We found students would do "format plagiarism" by looking at a Wikipedia article, grabbing the source and changing the content.
You can find Deakin's MediaWiki setup in EduGarage.
Slightly different approach, but does pretty much the same thing.
We have had some faculty and students say MediaWiki is too difficult and they have gone to over Peanut Butter Wiki, even without a Powerlink for seamless authentication. But with PB Wiki being hosted in the States, there are all those other "south of the 49th parallel" issues we have to contend with.
I understand Atlassain's Confluence (http://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence/) is also popular and can be integrated with a Powerlink. It's the wiki engine behind Blackboard's Wiki Knowledgebase (http://kb.blackboard.com)
Finally, if you look at presentations from past Blackboard/WebCT conferences you will find some presentations that Bonita and I did on use of wikis in online learning along with Ron and Amy's presentation on their implementation of MediaWiki at Simon Fraser U.
Thanks to Bob Boufford for this information.

Shidonni - Creative Fun for Kids
We have created Shidonni as a place to nurture kids' creativity and imagination.
We wanted to go one step further from the templates we found online and give a remarkable and personal experience, which allows kids of all ages to express themselves.
The answer was simple! Give any 4 year old a pen and a paper and see them create their own pets, friends, worlds, galaxies and stories.
Shidonni is mimicking just that. In Shidonni, kids get their own online "pen and paper" to sketch animals. The moment they do, their creations come to life 'virtually'.
Kids can then create worlds for their animals, feed them, play with them and share them with their friends.
Shidonni is ideal for kids aged 4-10 years old, but anyone can play. This is why we have added many layers of safety and privacy. We monitor any creation that is being shared globally and at this point, we are not allowing any type of chat or messaging. Our strict privacy policy can be found here.

I am not sure if I had a chance to announce our new prayer site. Kelli Boklaschuk spent a large amount of time creating a site which will allow our cyber school students, GSCS teachers and internet users the chance to express in digital format what they would like to pray for. I like the format and she did a very good job of the site. This like many of the things we do, is a ground breaking website, it has been up for over a month and the web is respecting its intent and it has not been abused by the spammers.
Thank you Kelli for all your work on this site.
The prayer site can be seen at:

eLearning Technology
This blog covers trends in eLearning and more broadly the use of technology that aims to improve human performance. This is fairly wide ranging from traditional courseware kinds of issues to specialized kinds of tools and sites. My background includes things like being the CTO of eHarmony (online marriage matching based on personality profiles and controlled communication) from its launch through their $110M venture round to working on interesting eLearning and tools for companies like Lexus, HP, IBM, etc. Thus, the blog has a tendency to jump into a wide range of technology types and solutions. I do generally focus from a corporate standpoint (not as much in the education realm). Of course, you'll get a better sense of this as you read through various post.

SMEET
Smeet lets you create 3D rooms where your avatar can chat and interact with other avators. You have register, but no download is necessary. A tool like this one might be useful in an education setting. For example, if students from our International Sister Classes Project were going to communicate in real time, Smeet might be a bit more engaging than some of the other applications on The Best Online Tools For Real-Time Collaboration list. I’ve asked Smeet if it is possible for teachers to create private rooms only available to their students. Their response has been “yes,” but they didn’t explain how to do it, and I can’t figure out how to incorporate the privacy option. Obviously, it would only be useful if that feature could be implemented.

Teacher Education Goes Into Virtual Schooling
Teacher Education Goes into Virtual Schooling (TEGIVS) is a national project leading preservice teacher education programs across the U.S. and the world. Its curriculum development and research prepare future teachers for the twenty-first century phenomenon of K-12 distance education (Virtual Schooling), through which all ages of students are learning from a teacher who is not located in their school. Students in all U.S. states are engaging in VS and the number is growing exponentially. A key to effective practice is teacher support in each student's location, thus, there is a pressing need to prepare all teachers for VS. TEGIVS will provide a model to incorporate VS in teacher education training for preservice programs across the U.S.

Virtual Schooling Glossary
This past semester the group of graduate students that form the K-12 online learning research group and I have been working on a glossary of virtual schooling. Basically, it’s purpose is to collect all of the terms that we can think of related to virtual school and to define them (based upon existing definitions in the literature or by creating our own definitions).
At this stage, we are ready to announce the glossary:
http://virtualschool.wikispaces.com/glossary
In addition to announcing the results of our efforts, we would also like to encourage feedback from the virtual school community. So, if you have comments about any terms that we may be missing or any definitions that you’d like to suggest revisions to, please e-mail me at mkbarbour-at-gmail-dot-com or post a comment to this blog.

Our Mission: To advance science and math education through the use of computational science, modeling and technology.
Shodor Education Foundation, Inc.
Take a Challenge
The rigors and demands of our increasingly complex, technologically dependent society have made high student achievement in mathematics a top priority among educators, policymakers, and employers. Todays citizens need more than basic computation and rote mathematical skills. They must master the higher-level concepts and approaches to problem solving that are key to success in work and everyday life.
To meet this need, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in cooperation with the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Widmeyer Communications, and the Learning First Alliance, launched Figure This!

Information Literacy is the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information efficiently and effectively. The Internet has a wide range of information. The quality and purpose of the information spans the spectrum from garbage to top notch and from expert to intentionally misleading.
Being able to evaluate the quality and purpose of information you encounter online can prevent a bad grade, but in the case of information you encounter through contacting people online evaluating the quality of that information can prevent a bad or life threatening experience. The activities contained in this section will help you develop critical evaluation skills in your students that will make them Cyber Safe and Information Literate.

Online Teaching Activity Index
ION is always trying to further the knowledge of online education. In the course of our research and practice, we come across many best practices in online teaching. This index represents a compilation of those activities to help instructors plan their online and hybrid courses. A complete description of each activity is given, along with examples when possible. Common educational uses of each activity are discussed as well as common educational objectives. Furthermore, teaching strategies for the given activity are provided. This index is primarily directed towards the use of these activities in senior high school and higher education. It also represents evidence that many quality educational activities are possible and feasible in the online classroom.

Language Teaching Clipart Library
This library consists of about 3000 images which we hope will be useful in the teaching of basic vocabulary in a variety of languages. The characters and objects depicted are as culturally neutral as we could make them.
This is not a huge resource of graphics; its purpose is to provide a set of those graphics most basic and useful for low-level language-teaching, and at the same time, to make them as easily searchable as possible.
The 3000 images consist of 1500 pairs. One member of each pair has a transparent background just big enough to fit the image, the other has a white background 110 by 110 pixels. For example, compare these two images:

Middle Years Professional Inquiry Cycle (MY PIC) is a professional development tool designed to support Middle Years teachers, grades 4-8, and teacher-librarians as they inform and advance teaching and student learning through a process of inquiry. In this process, teachers will define a question for inquiry relevant to student learning in their own classroom environment. Teachers will then have opportunities to connect to research and best practice as they investigate their question, experiment with new strategies and models of teaching in their own classroom, gather and reflect on student evidence stemming from that investigation and experimentation and share their findings in a professional learning community.

The Wonderful World of Early Computing
The history of computing spans thousands of years - from the primitive notched bones found in Africa, to the invention of abacus in 2400 BC, to Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine in 1883, to the rise of the popularity of Personal Computers (PCs) in the 1970s. For the most part, this timeline is marked by devices that bear little or no resemblance to present-day machines both in form and capabilities.
We’ve had many posts on Neatorama about the newest and greatest in computers and technology. But for this article, let’s go back - way back - and take a look at the wonderful world of early computing.

Growing Up Digital
"Constantly surrounded by technology, today's kids are accustomed to its strong presence in their lives. Today's kids are so bathed in bits that they are no more intimidated by digital technology than a VCR or a toaster. And it is through their use of the digital media that N-Gen will develop and superimpose its culture on the rest of society. Boomers stand back. Already these kids are learning, playing, communicating, working, and creating communities very differently than their parents. They are a force for social transformation. "[

Transforming Teaching through Technology
A pile of great resources.
Pay Attention
Over 10,000 hours taking on cellphones
And roughly 20,000 hours watching TV.
Today's children and teens spend 2.75 hours a week using home computers.
70% of our nation's 4-6 year-olds have used a computer
In any given day, 68% of children under two will use a screen media, for an average of just over two hours (2:05).
Why?
Richness
How much richness does your curriculum provide?
Do your students...remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create?
What do your students create?
"These teens were born into a digital world where they expect to be able to create, consume, remix, and share material with each other"
Are you reaching your students?
"We have learned to 'play school'. We study the right facts the night before the test so we achieve a passing grade and thus become a successful student."
"It's not attention deficit- I'm just not listening!"
Are you engaging them?
When I go to school, I have to 'power down'."

Rescuing Recess
Experts say fresh air and play give kids an edge in their school work. Yet, only 8 state school boards of education have a policy that ensures daily recess. Further, 55% of PTA leaders feel their school’s recess is in jeopardy. So Cartoon Network has created a successful, award-winning national movement called “Rescuing Recess” and National Recess Week (9/24/07-9/28/07) to safeguard and promote daily recess!

Digital Media Scoring Guides
Digital Storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and engages a palette of technical tools to weave personal tales using images, graphics, music and sound mixed together with the author's own story voice. Digital storytelling is an emerging art form of personal, heartful expression that enables individuals and communities to reclaim their personal cultures while exploring their artistic creativity. While the heart and power of the digital story is shaping a personal digital story about self, family, ideas, or experiences, the technology tools also invite writers and artists to think and invent new types of communication outside the realm of traditional linear narratives.

We the Teachers
WetheTeachers sprung out of a hypothetical idea that Nate and Amy had in the fall of 2005. After getting frustrated from fruitless searches for lesson plans and ideas, Amy wondered why there were so few websites that effectively catered to teachers. There is a lot of information, but little is organized. Even worse, many times the resources you need are only available with a yearly fee.
Amy told Nate, and together they imagined a website that combined both the resource aspect of teacher-focused sites, and the community aspect of social websites. Many months of work later, the site was born!

Online College Rankings 2007
Online higher education is growing, but a lack of transparency is preventing it from reaching its full potential. Even though online colleges are now receiving increased respect from top employers, diploma mills and the like limit the prestige of a legitimate online degree. We think more transparency is a good thing; a set of objective, quantitative rankings — however imperfect — should help shed some light on the relative attractiveness of the most popular accredited online colleges.

Cyber School Poem (Holy Crow is this corny)
Cyber School, I never told you how I truly feel
Being with you feels surreal
Love is our connection
You are like perfection
Cyber School, you are unbelievably beautiful
Not having met you earlier makes me feel like a fool
Words cannot express
How you have captured my heart with success
Cyber School, you mean so much to me
With you I really feel free
I anxiously await our time ahead
With impatience, I am fed
This education is for you, I hope you will like it
Because loving you, I will never quit
I look forward to our next moment together
I hope you enjoyed this letter
This poem was created by a poem generator, using Cyber School as the person I love and an education as an optional gift... and the above is what was created.
