The Technology Context of this Unit

The use of technology was infused throughout this project. In fact, one might say it was a main focus beyond the weather content of this unit. We wanted to students to experience new technologies while learning about weather.

Students had previous experience using the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School Web CT managed Cyber Planets. We did very little explaining with regards to using the content in the Cyber Planets.  Students have access to the Cyber Planets from anywhere they can access the Internet. In fact, one student accessed the material while on vacation in Jamaica.

We used technology to present each concept of the unit via Internet and LCP projector. Students were also video taped during these lessons. Students were given a short overview of how the video camera worked.

Students each had access to their own computers in the computer lab. At times they worked in groups, while other times they worked alone.

They learned new concepts regarding Internet searching, key words and evaluating web pages. They learned how to create a blog and input information into it via entries.
They learned how to write a video script and how to present themselves in a video.
They also learned how to manipulate html scripts and create hyperlinks.

The students in this class are at different levels with regards to their technological literacy. We made every effort to reinforce each concept introduced as well as provide additional teacher and peer support. As previously stated, all activities were available to access from any computer connected to the Internet, thus students were able to work and review at home alone, or with parental support.
